Strength training shown to reduce blood pressure when practiced with moderate to vigorous intensity 2–3 times a week (8 wks = -10/-5 reduction)
Publicado em 05 abril 2023
Strength training practiced with moderate to vigorous intensity two or three times a week is an effective way to mitigate arterial hypertension (high blood pressure), according to a study.
The group analyzed over 21,000 scientific articles and conducted a Cochrane meta-analysis, considered the gold standard for systematic reviews.
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, and high blood pressure accounts for 13.8% of deaths from such diseases. Arterial hypertension [...]

Anti-inflammatory drugs commonly taken by children can cause alterations to dental enamel, study shows (Celecoxib or indomethacin)
Publicado em 20 dezembro 2022A study conducted shows that anti-inflammatory drugs commonly taken by children may be associated with dental enamel defects (DEDs) currently seen in about 20% of children worldwide. The authors investigated the effects of celecoxib and indomethacin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), alongside paracetamol. Dentists have observed a sharp rise in the number of children seeking treatment for pain, white or yellow tooth spots, dental sensitivity and fragility. Dental decay in [...]ver notícia -
Protein restriction can be effective in combating obesity and diabetes, study suggests
Publicado em 20 setembro 2022Cutting protein intake can help control metabolic syndrome and some of its main symptoms, such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension), according to a study. "The study showed that cutting protein intake to 0.8 g per kg of body weight was sufficient to achieve almost the same clinical results as restricting calories, but without the need to reduce calorie intake. The results suggest that protein restriction may be one of the key factors leading to the known benefits [...]ver notícia -
Study shows that the amino acid taurine could be used in anti-aging therapy
Publicado em 20 julho 2022Our bodies arsenal of antioxidant control mechanisms become less efficient as we get older. Supplementing with the amino acid taurine could be a strategy to combat the problem. The study described 24 women randomly divided into two groups. One group took three 500 mg capsules of taurine per day for 16 weeks (1.5 g per day). The other took corn starch. Markers of oxidative stress were analyzed in blood samples. One interesting result was an increase of almost 20% in levels of the [...]ver notícia -
Enhanced scorpion venom molecules can be used to treat Chagas disease
Publicado em 21 dezembro 2020Animal toxins are research targets owing to their therapeutic and biotechnological potential. Researchers at the Federal University of the ABC (UFABC), Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and Federal University of Ceará (UFC) in Brazil have discovered that VmCT1, an antimicrobial peptide isolated from the venom of the scorpion Vaejovis mexicanus, and its analogs kill Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease. Previous research has demonstrated VmCT1's [...]ver notícia -
Food Replicator: Researchers Create Ingredients to Produce Food by 3D Printing
Publicado em 08 dezembro 2020Food engineers in Brazil and France developed gels based on modified starch for use as “ink” to make foods and novel materials by additive manufacturing. It is already possible to produce food with a 3D printer, potentially delivering products that suit consumer preferences regarding taste, texture, cost, convenience, and nutrition. In the near future, it will be possible to produce food with personalized shapes, textures, flavors, and colors considered attractive and healthy for [...]ver notícia -
Enzyme cocktail developed in Brazil powers production of second-generation ethanol
Publicado em 18 agosto 2020Researchers at the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) have genetically engineered a fungus to produce a cocktail of enzymes that break down the carbohydrates in biomass, such as sugarcane trash (tops and leaves) and bagasse, into fermentable sugar for industrially efficient conversion into biofuel. The development of low-cost enzyme cocktails is one of the main challenges in producing second-generation ethanol. Second-generation biofuels are manufactured from [...]ver notícia -
Scientists Print Functional Human "Mini-Livers"
Publicado em 23 dezembro 2019Brazilian researchers have succesfully bioprinted tiny organoids that perform all of the human liver’s functions, Brazilian news service Agência FAPESP reports — functions including building proteins, storing vitamins and secreting bile. The researchers had to cultivate and reprogram human stem cells, and then 3D print them in layers to form tissue. While the “mini-livers” perform the functions of a liver, they’re unfortunately still a far cry from an [...]ver notícia
