Brazil Leads in Sugarcane Bioenergy Research, Review Reveals
Publicado em 27 novembro 2023
Publications on sugarcane have increased exponentially since 2006 worldwide, and Brazil has had more articles published on the topic than any other country in the period, according to a review in BioEnergy Research.
The number of articles on the subject averaged about five per year between 1999 and 2006 but had reached 327 by 2021. Brazil has twice as many articles on sugarcane as the United States, which ranks first in the world for scientific publications in general. Brazil is [...]

Promising Results in Battle Against Vanadium Battery Capacity Loss
Publicado em 22 novembro 2023An article by researchers at the Center for Development of Functional Materials (CDMF) in Brazil describes a successful strategy to mitigate charge capacity loss in vanadium redox flow batteries, which are used by electric power utilities among other industries and can accumulate large amounts of energy. The article is published in the Chemical Engineering Journal. CDMF is a Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center (RIDC) funded by FAPESP and hosted by the Federal University of [...]ver notícia -
Fossil Find Challenges Silesaurid Phylogeny Classification
Publicado em 21 novembro 2023A set of fossils recovered in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil's southernmost state, has brought an extra layer of complexity to the study of the evolutionary history of silesaurids, a family of dinosauriforms (dinosaurs and their close relatives) that lived in the Triassic period between 247 million and 208 million years ago. In an article published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, researchers affiliated with institutions in Brazil and the United States show that even with the new [...]ver notícia -
Marmoset Rabies Virus Variants Discovered in Bats
Publicado em 17 novembro 2023Rabies virus variants closely related to variants present in White-tufted marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) have been detected in bats in Ceará state, Northeast Brazil. Rabies is a deadly disease for humans. Its emergence in distinct wildlife species is a potential source of human infection and hence a public health concern. Marmosets are common in forests and conservation units throughout Brazil. In or near urban areas, they are often captured as pets and later abandoned. They have [...]ver notícia -
New Technique Advances Study of Neurodegenerative Disease Lipids
Publicado em 16 novembro 2023Lipids are a diversified class of biomolecules with a wide array of functions, from energy storage to regulation of fundamental cellular processes. Oxidized lipids have received considerable attention because of their association with oxidative stress, inflammation and cell signaling. Oxylipins, for example, are bioactive lipids generated by oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and have been associated with several neurodegenerative diseases. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) [...]ver notícia -
Bacterial Protein Found to Preserve Human Cell Health: Study
Publicado em 09 novembro 2023Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, partnering with colleagues in Australia, have identified a novel bacterial protein that can keep human cells healthy even when the cells have a heavy bacterial burden. The discovery could lead to new treatments for a wide array of diseases relating to mitochondrial dysfunction, such as cancer and auto-immune disorders. Mitochondria are organelles that supply most of the chemical energy needed to power cells' biochemical [...]ver notícia -
Brazil's University of São Paulo Tests Molecule, Reduces Heart Failure
Publicado em 08 novembro 2023Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, partnering with Foresee Pharmaceuticals, a Taiwan and US-based biopharmaceutical company, have tested a synthetic molecule for the treatment of heart failure. The study, funded by FAPESP, was published yesterday (11/07/2023) in the European Heart Journal. The theme was also highlighted in the magazine's editorial. Heart failure is a condition in which the heart muscle cannot pump enough blood to meet the body's needs [...]ver notícia -
New Test Identifies Parasite Co-Infection in Severe Leishmaniasis Cases
Publicado em 01 novembro 2023In recent years, physicians and scientists in parts of Brazil where visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic have seen rising numbers of cases of co-infection by Leishmania infantum and Crithidia, also a protozoan but hitherto believed to be a mosquito parasite that cannot infect humans or other mammals. Accurate diagnosis is hindered by a lack of simple specific tests (more at: https://agencia.fapesp.br/42072 and https://agencia.fapesp.br/31581). To accelerate and facilitate [...]ver notícia -
Chemical Process Mimics Amyloid Plaques in Peptide Structure
Publicado em 01 novembro 2023Peptides are biomolecules formed when two or more amino acids that perform key functions in the human organism, such as hormones, neurotransmitters, painkillers and antibiotics, bind together. For this reason, they are much studied and used by the pharmaceutical industry, for example. A study conducted by scientists in the Department of Biophysics at the Federal University of São Paulo's Medical School (EPM-UNIFESP) in Brazil identified significant changes in the physicochemical [...]ver notícia -
Wealthier Areas See Thyroid Cancer Rise Due to Test Access
Publicado em 31 outubro 2023The incidence of thyroid cancer in São Paulo State, part of Brazil's relatively developed Southeast region, varies considerably according to socioeconomic status (education, poverty, wealth, income, segregation, mobility, and access to resources and services) and access to screening, but is highest in higher-income areas and the state capital. Mortality rates are similar across regions and income groups, however. These are the main findings of a study reported in the journal [...]ver notícia
