Researchers develop models to predict epidemics of yellow fever, other mosquito-borne diseases
Publicado em 23 fevereiro 2021
Yellow fever was the first human disease to have a licensed vaccine and has long been considered important to an understanding of how epidemics happen and should be combated. It was introduced to the Americas in the seventeenth century, and high death rates have resulted from successive outbreaks since then. Epidemics of yellow fever were associated with the slave trade, the US gold rush and settlement of the Old West, the Haitian Revolution, and construction of the Panama Canal, to cite only a [...]

Lung ultrasound helps predict clinical progression of severe COVID-19 patients
Publicado em 10 fevereiro 2021Lung ultrasound, considered a simple method for diagnosing lung disease, can also help predict the clinical progression of severe COVID-19 patients, according to a study conducted at the University of São Paulo's Medical School (FM-USP) in São Paulo City, Brazil. The principal investigator for the study was Heraldo Possolo de Souza, a professor at FM-USP and an attending physician at its teaching and general hospital, Hospital das Clínicas (HC). The researchers [...]ver notícia -
Novel plastic film can deactivate 99.99% of the new coronavirus in 15 minutes
Publicado em 08 fevereiro 2021A consortium comprised by companies Braskem, AplFilm and Nanox and the UFSCar (Brazil) and Jaume I of Castellón (Spain) universities have released a plastic film capable of deactivating 99.99% of the new coronavirus in 15 minutes. The new product called AlpFilm Protect PVC is already available on the market. The scientific collaboration initiated 15 years ago between the UFSCar and UJI with company Nanox had already developed in 2014 a product with antifungal and bactericidal [...]ver notícia -
New study looks at signs of mental suffering and their association with dreams during pandemic
Publicado em 05 fevereiro 2021The COVID-19 pandemic has affected people's behavior everywhere. Fear, apprehensiveness, sadness, anxiety, and other troublesome feelings have become part of the daily lives of many families since the first cases of the disease were officially recorded early last year. These turbulent feelings are often expressed in dreams reflecting a heavier burden of mental suffering, fear of contamination, stress caused by social distancing, and lack of physical contact with others. In addition, dream [...]ver notícia -
Study explains why people of African descent are less likely to find bone marrow donors
Publicado em 02 fevereiro 2021A paper by a multidisciplinary team of scientists affiliated with various Brazilian institutions, including the University of São Paulo (USP) and the National Cancer Institute (INCA), shows that people of African descent are less likely to find a donor in the National Register of Voluntary Bone Marrow Donors (REDOME) than people with predominantly European ancestry. The paper is published in Frontiers in Immunology. REDOME is the world’s third-largest bone marrow bank, with more [...]ver notícia -
Researchers develop rapid COVID-19 diagnostic test affordable for low-income families
Publicado em 02 fevereiro 2021A test that detects antibodies to the novel coronavirus in 10 minutes and costs only a fifth of the market average has been developed by researchers at the University of São Paulo's São Carlos Chemistry Institute (IQSC-USP) and Brazilian startup Biolinker, with São Paulo Research Foundation - FAPESP's support. The device works similarly to the rapid tests available now in pharmacies. It analyzes a drop of blood, and two red LEDs light up if it detects the presence [...]ver notícia -
Startup develops yeast-based test to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in saliva
Publicado em 29 janeiro 2021Incubated at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and supported by São Paulo Research Foundation- FAPESP's Innovative Research in Small Business Program (PIPE), BIOinFOOD is a startup that is developing a rapid COVID-19 diagnostic test based on a patent application filed by students at UNICAMP's Genomics and Bioenergy Laboratory. The test is based on a biosensor consisting of a genetically modified brewer's yeast (Saccharomyces [...]ver notícia -
Melatonin synthesized in the lungs acts as a barrier against SARS-CoV-2
Publicado em 28 janeiro 2021Melatonin synthesized in the lungs acts as a barrier against SARS-CoV-2, preventing expression of genes that encode proteins in cells such as resident macrophages in the nose and pulmonary alveoli, and epithelial cells lining the alveoli, all of which are entry points for the virus, APA reports citing Melatonin Research magazine. The hormone, therefore, prevents infection of these cells by the virus and inhibits the immune response so that the virus remains in the respiratory tract for a few [...]ver notícia -
Researchers investigate protein phosphatase to identify new treatments for cancer, other diseases
Publicado em 13 janeiro 2021The abundant presence of an enzyme known as low molecular weight protein tyrosine phosphatase (LMWPTP) in tumor cells has long been considered an indicator of cancer aggressiveness and metastatic potential. It is also known to perform important functions in cells under normal conditions, participating in both the proliferation process and the regulation of intracellular systems. Research continues on its role in cancer progression. In Brazil, a group of researchers at the University of [...]ver notícia -
Scientists decipher the structure of protein found in parasites that cause neglected tropical diseases
Publicado em 08 janeiro 2021Brazilian researchers have managed to decipher the structure of a protein found in parasites that cause neglected tropical diseases, paving the way to the development of novel medications. Thanks to the discovery it will be possible to seek more potent molecules capable of destroying the pathogens directly, with fewer adverse side-effects for patients. The study detailed the structural characteristics of the protein deoxyhypusine synthase (DHS), found in Brugia malayi, one of the [...]ver notícia
