Researchers Shed Light on How Exercise Preserves Physical Fitness During Aging
Publicado em 06 janeiro 2023
Proven to protect against a wide array of diseases, exercise may be the most powerful anti-aging intervention known to science. However, while physical activity can improve health during aging, its beneficial effects inevitably decline. The cellular mechanisms underlying the relationship among exercise, fitness and aging remain poorly understood.
In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers at Joslin Diabetes Center investigated the role of one [...]

Researchers Develop A Light Source That Produces Two Entangled Light Beams
Publicado em 03 janeiro 2023Scientists are increasingly studying quantum entanglement, which occurs when two or more systems are created or interact in such a manner that the quantum states of some cannot be described independently of the quantum states of the others. The systems are correlated, even when they are separated by a large distance. The significant potential for applications in encryption, communications and quantum computing spurs research. The difficulty is that when the systems interact with their [...]ver notícia -
Artificial intelligence helps Brazilian breeders select desired traits of native fish
Publicado em 15 dezembro 2022If you look at a net full of pacus (Piaractus mesopotamicus), you cannot distinguish with the naked eye which individuals will have descendants with higher filet yield or faster weight gain. Their growth can be monitored with a tape measure, and they can be weighed on a scale. The data can be tabulated and compared. But to breed an entire population with the right characteristics, some 2,000 fish per generation must be measured and weighed, and the task can take days. In Brazil, [...]ver notícia -
Review of More Than 1,000 Articles Seeks to Understand How Nanomaterials Affect Plants
Publicado em 17 novembro 2022With the metadata (data generated from the data published in the literature), the authors systematized the knowledge produced collectively to date on the most used nanomaterials, the type of environment to which plants are exposed, the plant organs most exposed to treatments, and the duration of studies. In addition, they calculated the percentages of nanomaterial-based treatments that had positive effects, negative effects and both, as well as those that had no effect on plants. The study [...]ver notícia -
Reducing childhood poverty could cut criminal convictions by almost a quarter, study shows
Publicado em 01 novembro 2022A significant reduction in childhood poverty could cut criminal convictions by almost a quarter, according to a study conducted in Brazil. An article on the study is published in Scientific Reports. The researchers used an innovative approach involving an analysis of 22 risk factors that affect human development and interviews with 1,905 children at two points—a first interview to form a baseline (mean age 10.3) and a follow-up interview seven years later (mean age 17.8). The [...]ver notícia -
Study quantifies impact of human activity on Atlantic Rainforest’s carbon storage capacity
Publicado em 13 setembro 2022The countless benefits of native forests include the capacity of tree biomass to store large amounts of carbon, which can counterbalance greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. A paper published in the journal Science Advances reports on an innovative analysis of a large dataset designed to clarify the concept of carbon sequestration, a strategic issue in the discussion of global climate change. “We still know little about the factors that can lead forests to store more [...]ver notícia -
Brazil has two populations of American bullfrogs, an exotic species that transmits a deadly fungus
Publicado em 09 setembro 2022Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) and the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) have conducted the most comprehensive genetic analysis ever of the American bullfrog (Aquarana catesbeiana) in Brazil, concluding that there are two populations of the species here, living on frog farms or invading local ecosystems. Bullfrogs are considered the world’s main invasive amphibian. An article on the study is published in Scientific Reports. “We confirmed the [...]ver notícia -
Researchers use AI to define priority areas for action to combat deforestation in the Amazon
Publicado em 24 agosto 2022Using a method based on satellite images and artificial intelligence, Brazilian researchers have shown that the priority area for actions to combat illegal deforestation could comprise 27.8% less territory than the 11 municipalities monitored by the federal government under the current strategy, known as the Amazon Plan 2021/2022. This monitoring ignores new deforestation frontiers outside the targeted areas. According to an article by the researchers, published in June in Conservation [...]ver notícia -
Scientists reveal method of converting methane gas into liquid methanol
Publicado em 03 agosto 2022A group of researchers has succeeded in converting methane into methanol using light and dispersed transition metals such as copper in a process known as photo-oxidation. According to an article reporting the study published in Chemical Communications, the reaction was the best obtained to date for conversion of methane gas into liquid fuel under ambient conditions of temperature and pressure (25 °C and 1 bar respectively). The term bar as a unit of pressure derives from the Greek word [...]ver notícia -
North Atlantic temperature helps forecast extreme events in Northeast Brazil up to three months in advance
Publicado em 22 julho 2022The sea surface temperature in the North Atlantic Ocean can be a predictor up to three months in advance of extreme climate events involving reduced rainfall and intense drought in the Northeast region of Brazil. This is one of the main findings of a study by researchers in Brazil, China, Australia and Germany, according to an article published in Geophysical Research Letters. Using a novel methodology based on the concept of precipitation deficit, the study showed that in recent years the [...]ver notícia
