New technology unscrambles the chatter of microbes
Publicado em 05 fevereiro 2024
Researchers from University of California San Diego, as part of a large collaboration with scientists around the world, have developed a new search tool to help researchers better understand the metabolism of microorganisms. Microbes are key players in virtually all biological and environmental systems, yet limitations in current techniques used to study microbial metabolism make it difficult to decode their interactions and activities.

Study reveals areas of Brazilian Amazon where no ecological research has been done
Publicado em 16 outubro 2023Many parts of the Brazilian Amazon are neglected in ecological research, for several reasons, according to an article published in the journal Current Biology. Authored by Joice Ferreira of the Federal University of Pará (UFP) and colleagues from many countries who also belong to the Synergize Consortium, the article identifies the areas missing from ecological research and the factors that have determined these gaps, pinpointing opportunities for the planning of new investments in [...]ver notícia -
Wildfires threaten environmental gains in climate-crucial Amazon
Publicado em 16 outubro 2023Despite steps toward decreasing deforestation, uncontrolled wildfires are threatening environmental gains in Brazilian Amazonia, one of the world’s most critical carbon sinks and a region of high biological and cultural diversity. An international team of scientists, including Tyndall researchers Rachel Carmenta and Matthew Jones, are raising the alarm in a letter published today in Nature Ecology & Evolution. ‘Increasing wildfires threaten progress on halting deforestation in [...]ver notícia -
Understanding of mechanisms behind post-exercise lack of appetite can open new paths to obesity treatment
Publicado em 27 setembro 2023The complex relationship between physical activity and energy balance – food intake versus energy expenditure – is still a challenge for science, especially in light of the rising worldwide prevalence of overweight and obesity. Some of the medications available on the market to combat obesity work analogously to hormones associated with appetite control, and for some time researchers have focused on understanding how processes involving metabolites (products of cell metabolism) [...]ver notícia -
Cell therapy can reduce risk of death from COVID-19 by 60%, study shows
Publicado em 18 setembro 2023The use of cell therapy to treat COVID-19 patients can reduce the risk of death from the disease by 60%, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, in partnership with colleagues in Germany and the United States. Their findings are reported in an article published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology. The review covers 195 clinical trials of advanced cell therapies targeting COVID-19 [...]ver notícia -
Climate change-induced drought may transform parts of the Amazon’s rainforests into savannas
Publicado em 29 agosto 2023A portion of Amazonian lowland rainforest – areas critical to absorbing carbon dioxide and buffering climate change – may morph over time into dry, grassy savannas, according to a Rutgers-led study. The report, published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, described a new understanding of how alternating flooding in the wet season and drought in the dry season, called double-stress, can limit forest establishment and [...]ver notícia -
Glitter impairs growth of organisms with key roles in aquatic ecosystems, study shows
Publicado em 22 agosto 2023A study conducted by researchers affiliated with the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil concluded that particles of glitter can hinder the growth of organisms at the base of aquatic ecosystems, such as cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), which play a key role in the biogeochemical cycles of water and soil, as well as being eaten by other organisms. An article on the study is published in the journal Aquatic Toxicology. Ubiquitous in makeup, nail polish, holiday [...]ver notícia -
Amazon dark earth boosts tree growth as much as sixfold
Publicado em 01 agosto 2023A type of soil called terra preta da Amazônia, or Amazon dark earth (ADE), promotes faster growth of trees and enhances their development in qualitative terms, according to an article published in the journal Frontiers in Soil Science. The findings reported in the article resulted from studies supported by FAPESP (projects 20/08927-0, 18/19000-4 and 14/50320-4) under the aegis of its Biodiversity, Characterization, Conservation, Restoration [...]ver notícia -
Brazilian coast is warmer and is having more frequent extreme temperature events, study shows
Publicado em 18 julho 2023The Brazilian coast, especially in the South and Southeast regions, is already suffering from the impact of climate change, with increasingly extreme surface air temperatures and more frequent swings from heat to cold and back. This is one of the results of a study described in an article published in Scientific Reports, a journal of the Springer Nature group. On the coast of Espírito Santo, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo states, the frequency of temperature extremes and [...]ver notícia -
Cleft Lip Caused by Combination of Genes and Environment
Publicado em 24 maio 2023A cleft lip or palate arises from the combined effects of genes and inflammatory risk factors experienced during pregnancy, such as smoking or infections, finds a new study led by University College London (UCL) researchers. The study, published in Nature Communications, has revealed for the first time how genetic and environmental factors come together to form a cleft lip or palate in a developing fetus. Cleft lip, with or without cleft palate, is the most common craniofacial malformation [...]ver notícia
