South American lizard’s blood pressure mechanism is more efficient at cool temperatures
Publicado em 18 fevereiro 2021
The mechanism that keeps arterial blood pressure stable in black and white tegu lizards (Salvator merianae) even as their body temperature varies substantially is more efficient at lower than higher external temperatures, contrary to what has always been believed, and vascular regulation plays a key role in pressure adjustments, according to an article published in PLOS ONE by researchers at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.

Scientists create flexible biocompatible cilia that can be controlled by a magnet
Publicado em 09 fevereiro 2021Researchers on the University of Campinas’s Chemistry Institute (IQ-UNICAMP) within the state of São Paulo, Brazil, have developed a template-free method to manufacture cilia of various sizes that mimic organic capabilities and have a number of purposes, from directing fluids in microchannels to loading materials into a cell, for instance. The extremely flexible cilia are based mostly on polymer-coated iron oxide nanoparticles, and their movement can be controlled by a magnet. In [...]ver notícia -
Startup develops yeast-based COVID-19 diagnostic test

The test is predicated on a biosensor consisting of a genetically modified [...]ver notícia -
Large mammals make soil more fertile in tropical forests
Publicado em 16 janeiro 2021The White-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari) is a boar-like hoofed mammal found throughout Central and South America. These animals roam the forest in bands of 50 to 100 individuals, eating a wide variety of foods. In Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest, they prefer the fruit of the jussara palm Euterpe edulis. The jussara is very abundant in this biome, probably thanks to vast amounts of dung, urine, and soil trampling by peccaries as well as tapirs (Tapirus terrestris) and other fruit-eating [...]ver notícia
