Your Morning Coffee May Be 600K Years Old
Publicado em 16 abril 2024
That coffee you slurped this morning? It's 600,000 years old. Using genes from coffee plants around the world, researchers built a family tree for the world's most popular type of coffee, known to scientists as Coffea arabica and to coffee lovers simply as "arabica," the AP reports. The researchers, hoping to learn more about the plants to better protect them from pests and climate change, found that the species emerged around 600,000 years ago through natural crossbreeding of [...]

Your morning coffee may be more than a half million years old
Publicado em 15 abril 2024That coffee you slurped this morning? It’s 600,000 years old. Using genes from coffee plants around the world, researchers built a family tree for the world’s most popular type of coffee, known to scientists as Coffea arabica and to coffee lovers simply as “arabica.” The researchers, hoping to learn more about the plants to better protect them from pests and climate change, found that the species emerged around 600,000 years ago through natural crossbreeding of two [...]ver notícia -
70% of New Type 2 Diabetes Cases Are Linked to This
Publicado em 18 abril 2023The CDC expects to see a 700% increase in the number of young Americans diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes by 2060. It's both a national and global problem and, according to new research, poor diet is largely to blame. Researchers from Tufts University created a model based on dietary data from 184 countries and found 70% of Type 2 diabetes diagnoses in 2018, some 14 million cases, could be tied to poor diet—well above the 40% figure previously offered, according to a release. They also [...]ver notícia -
Mysterious Ring Spotted Around Minor Planet
Publicado em 10 fevereiro 2023Astronomers have made a puzzling discovery in the deep reaches of the solar system, far beyond Neptune. Quaoar, a minor planet in the Kuiper belt, has a ring like those around Saturn, but it is further from the planet than the zone where current models say rings are possible. The ring is more than seven planetary radiii away from Quaoar, more than twice as far as the Roche limit, which was thought to be the maximum distance that rings could form, the Guardian reports. "This is [...]ver notícia -
Jolting discovery: Powerful new electric eel found
Publicado em 11 setembro 2019Researchers report two newly discovered species of electric eels in South America, one of which can deliver a bigger jolt than any other known animal. The researchers collected 107 eels in four countries and found differences in their DNA, along with minor physical variations. One species had the ability to generate 860 volts of electricity, more than the 650 volts discharged by the only previously identified type of electric eel. While 250 species of fish in South America generate [...]ver notícia -
A shocking find : new high-voltage electric eels revealed
Publicado em 10 setembro 2019Call it a shock discovery: DNA research has revealed two entirely new species of electric eel in the Amazon basin, including one capable of delivering a record-breaking jolt. The findings are evidence, researchers say, of the incredible diversity in the Amazon rainforest — much of it still unknown to science — and illustrate why it is so important to protect a habitat at risk from deforestation, logging and fires. “In spite of all human impact on the Amazon rainforest in the [...]ver notícia
