Prior Zika infection may spike risk of severe dengue: Study
Publicado em 07 de fevereiro de 2024
People who have had zika run a higher risk of subsequently having severe dengue and being hospitalised, a new study has showed.
The analysis by a team of Brazilian researchers showed that patients with a history of zika infection had a 2.34 times higher risk of developing severe dengue.
They also had a 3.39 times higher risk of hospitalisation compared to the controls (subjects with no dengue and no zika history). Relatively advanced age (over 59) was also a higher risk factor for severe [...]

Severe Covid-19 is a thrombotic disease: Study
Publicado em 09 dezembro 2023Sao Paulo, Dec 9 (Always First) Blood clotting (thrombosis) in the capillary vessels of the lungs is one of the first consequences of severe Covid-19, even preceding the respiratory distress caused by diffuse alveolar damage, according to a study. The study, published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, described autopsies of nine patients who died after developing the severe form of the disease showed a clearly typified condition involving alterations to lung vascularisation and [...]ver notícia -
Cell therapy can cut death risk from Covid-19 by 60%: Study
Publicado em 19 setembro 2023New Delhi, Sep 19 (Always First) The use of cell therapy to treat COVID-19 patients can reduce the risk of death from the disease by 60 per cent, according to a new study. The systematic review and meta-analysis covered 195 clinical trials of advanced cell therapies targeting COVID-19 that were conducted in 30 countries between January 2020 and December 2021, as well as 26 trials with outcomes published by July 2022. The findings of the study, conducted by researchers at the University of [...]ver notícia -
Sugar consumption, early interruption of breastfeeding are risk factors for dental caries: Study
Publicado em 07 fevereiro 2023Washington [US], February 7 (Always First): A study involving 800 children has shown the inclusion of sugar in their diet and early interruption of breastfeeding to be the main factors that contribute to the appearance of dental caries by age 2. The study was published in the journal ‘Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology’. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, followed by solid food together with continued [...]ver notícia -
Research explores how exercise preserves physical fitness during aging
Publicado em 06 janeiro 2023Washington [US], January 6 (AF): Exercise may be the most powerful anti-aging intervention known to science and has been proven to protect against a wide array of diseases. However, while physical activity can improve health during aging, its beneficial effects inevitably decline. The cellular mechanisms underlying the relationship between exercise, fitness, and aging remain poorly understood. In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers at [...]ver notícia -
New research adds to understanding of genetic factors that naturally protect people from COVID-19
Publicado em 22 novembro 2022Washington [US], November 22 (Always First): Two recent papers by Brazilian researchers have added to the scientific understanding of the genetic factors that protect people from SARS-CoV-2 infection or prevent progression to severe COVID-19. The first describes the findings of a study involving a group of resilient older people aged 90 or more, while the second examines a case of severe COVID-19 in identical twins, only one of whom had long-term symptoms of the disease. Since 2020, [...]ver notícia -
Artificial intelligence aids in predicting sugarcane field performance: Study
Publicado em 20 outubro 2022Washington [US], October 20 (Always First): According to a Brazilian study published in Scientific Reports, artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to develop efficient models for the genomic selection of sugarcane and forage grass varieties and predict their field performance based on their DNA. In terms of accuracy compared with traditional breeding techniques, the methodology developed with support from FAPESP improved predictive power by more than 50%. This is the first time a highly [...]ver notícia -
Protein restriction may be useful in reducing obesity, diabetes: Study
Publicado em 21 setembro 2022Washington [US], September 21 (Always First): According to a study, reducing protein consumption can help regulate metabolic syndrome and some of its key symptoms, such as obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure (hypertension). An article reporting the study is published in the journal Nutrients. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that heighten the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes, including hypertension, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist [...]ver notícia -
Pyramidal neurons that gauge speed, location identified during research
Publicado em 18 setembro 2022Washington [US], September 18 (ANI): More than a decade after the role of pyramidal neurons in mental representations of space and location was discovered, a group of researchers have identified a subtype of neurons that can gauge speed with great precision. “In experiments involving animals, we demonstrated an association between the electrical activity of inhibitory interneurons and speed representations in the brain,” Alexandre Kihara, a neuroscientist at the Federal [...]ver notícia -
Researchers discover pyramidal neurons that gauge speed, location
Publicado em 15 setembro 2022Washington [US], September 15 (AF): A group of researchers has made an important contribution to scientists’ understanding of the brain’s navigation system by identifying a subtype of these neurons that can gauge speed with great precision, more than a decade after the role of pyramidal neurons in mental representations of space and location was discovered. “In experiments involving animals, we demonstrated an association between the electrical activity of inhibitory [...]ver notícia
