Why covid infection in some causes fatal inflammation, study finds
Publicado em 25 novembro 2022
Scientists have uncovered a new mechanism that could help explain why some Covid infected people develop a potentially fatal systemic inflammation, according to a study.
Researchers at the University of Sao Paulo (USP) in Brazil have found that severe COVID-19 is associated with an imbalance in an important immune system signalling pathway.
The researchers detected "dysregulation", or a dysfunctional regulation, of the immune system mediated by adenosine triphosphate (ATP), one [...]

Study clarifies how physical exercise burns muscle fat – EurekAlert
Publicado em 06 novembro 2022An article published in Science Advances describes for the first time a neuromuscular circuit that links the burning of muscle fat to the action of a protein in the brain. The findings, obtained in Brazil by researchers at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and the University of São Paulo (USP), contribute to a deeper understanding of how regular physical exercise helps weight loss, reinforcing the importance of this habit to good health. “We [...]ver notícia -
Scientists discover the mechanism that can cause the collapse of the great Atlantic circulation system
Publicado em 18 outubro 2022The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), a system of ocean currents that carry warm water from the tropics into the North Atlantic and transport cold water from the northern to the southern hemisphere, is a fundamental mechanism for the regulation of Earth’s climate. The conveyor belt has collapsed in the past owing to natural factors. The most recent collapse played a key role in the last deglaciation. AMOC is now threatened by global warming, scientists have shown, and a [...]ver notícia -
Brazilian scientists reveal method of converting methane gas into liquid methanol
Publicado em 15 agosto 2022A group of researchers has succeeded in converting methane into methanol using light and dispersed transition metals such as copper in a process known as photo-oxidation. The reaction was the best obtained to date for conversion of methane gas into liquid fuel under ambient conditions of temperature and pressure (25 °C and 1 bar respectively). The term bar as a unit of pressure derives from the Greek word for weight (baros). One bar is equivalent to 100,000 Pascals (100 kPa), which is [...]ver notícia -

Scientists discover how forest fires influence rain cloud formation in the Amazon
Publicado em 01 novembro 2021By Thais Szegö | Agência FAPESP– A Brazilian studypublishedin the journalCommunications Earth Environmentshows how wildfires and forest burning for agriculture influence rain cloud formation in the Amazon. According to the authors, aerosols (tiny solid particles and liquid droplets emitted into the atmosphere by fire) hinder the freezing of cloud droplets when the atmosphere is humidified, but can also promote freezing when the atmosphere is dry. This alters the natural [...]ver notícia -
Birds that disperse more types of seed have better evolutionary chances
Publicado em 12 agosto 2021More than 70% of plant species that produce flowers depend on birds to disperse their seeds. Birds feed on fruit from a wide array of different plants, and bird-plant interactions configure a welter of complex networks. A study conducted at the University of São Paulo’s Institute of Biosciences (IB-USP) in Brazil shows that the evolutionary stability of each bird species depends on the position it occupies in these networks, increasing in step with the number and centrality of [...]ver notícia
