The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) is a state-of-the-art optical/infrared telescope under development in northern Chile that will enable vital discoveries at maximum sensitivity, such as galaxies in the early universe and Earth-sized planets that orbit nearby stars. The University of Texas at Austin is investing another $45 million in the GMT, the world’s toughest telescope. This additional investment brings the university’s overall commitment to $110. 3 million. The GMT organization is a foreign consortium, and new investments by its partners now total $205 million to improve the design. In addition to the most recent contribution from UT Austin, it includes commitments from the Carnegie Institution for Science, Harvard University, the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), the University of Arizona, and the University of Chicago. “I am bummed that six like-minded people at the Giant Magellan Telescope have worked together to make an impressive new financial commitment to the design of the telescope and its tools, bringing the telescope closer to first light,” said Taft Armandroff, director. of the university’s McDonald Observatory and vice president of the board of directors of the GMT organization. “GMT will provide transformative observation capabilities to our faculty, students, and students. The Mirror Lab at ArizonaArray and built one of the most complex clinical tools, led by UT Austin, called the GMT Near Infrared Spectrograph (GMTNIRS). “We are revered for getting this investment long-term,” said GMT Chairman Robert Shelton. “The investment is, in fact, a collaborative effort by our founders. It will result in the making of the world’s largest mirrors, the creation of a giant telescope to hold and align them, and a clinical tool that will allow us to examine the chemical evolution of stars and planets like never before. The Academy of Sciences’ Astro2020 Decadal Survey has rated the Giant Magellan Telescope as a top spouse in the United States’ Extremely Large Telescopes program. Astro2020 indexed the program as a sensible top priority and “absolutely imperative if the United States is to maintain its position as a leader in gcircular-based astronomy. ” GMT is being built at Carnegie’s Las Campanas Observatory in Chile and will allow astronomers to see farther into the domain in greater detail than any previous optical telescope. It will have 10 times the smooth collection domain and 4 times the spatial resolution of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and be up to two hundred times more robust than existing survey telescopes. This unprecedented wide angle solution, combined with wide angle spectrographs and height contrast cameras, will work in direct synergy with JWST to enable new clinical discoveries. GMT will be the next step in reading out the physics and chemistry of the weakest light resources in the domain that JWST will identify. This includes searching for life in the atmospheres of potentially habitable planets, reading about the earliest galaxies to form in the universe, and searching for clues to the mysteries of dark matter, Dark PowerArray black holes, and the formation of the universe. with some of the brightest engineers and scientists from the world’s leading think tanks,” said Walter Massey, Chairman of the GMT Board of Directors and former Chairman of the National Science Foundation and Chairman of Bank of America. “Recent contributions from our investor spouses on the Giant Magellan Telescope are jointly pushing the boundaries of astronomy, making the long-term truth and enabling us to achieve some key science goals, adding ‘Are we alone in the universe?'” The telescope has already made significant progress in design in recent years. Six of the seven number one mirror segments were cast in Tucson, Arizona. The number one third mirror segment has completed its two-year polishing phase and is undergoing final testing. Construction of a 40,000 foot square in Rockford, Illinois to fabricate the telescope design is complete. The production of the telescope’s first adaptive secondary mirror is quite complex in France and Italy, and the site in Chile is ready for the next level of design and for the pouring of the This new $205 million investment circular positions the Giant Magellan Telescope as one of the first of a new generation of incredibly gigantic telescopes to be built. First light is expected until the end of the decade.
