Curcumin derived from the roots of Curcuma longa (turmeric plant) was found to help prevent or combat stomach cancer, said researchers at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) in Brazil. Stomach cancer is the third and fifth most frequent type of cancer among Brazilian men and women respectively. The study was part of a Thematic Project supported by São Paulo Research Foundation - FAPESP. Its findings have been published in the journal Epigenomics.
