A longitudinal study conducted by researchers from the Department of Gerontology (DGero) and postgraduate programs at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) and University College London (UCL) identified vitamin D deficiency in people over 50 years increase the risk of muscle. weakness.
The study was developed by Maicon Luís Bicigo Delinocente during his master’s research, conducted at UFSCar under the guidance of Tiago da Silva Alexandre, professor at DGero and coordinator of the International Collaboration of Longitudinal Studies of Aging (InterCoLAging) – a consortium of longitudinal studies that includes epidemiological data from Brazil and England.

In conclusion the study revealed that those with vitamin D deficiency at baseline had a 70% greater risk of developing muscle weakness at the end of the four-year follow-up than those with normal vitamin levels at baseline.
The researchers added that when individuals with osteoporosis who were taking vitamin D supplements were removed from the analyses, those who were vitamin D deficient at baseline were found to have a 78% greater risk of develop muscle weakness and those with vitamin D deficiency at baseline had 77% more risk of developing weakness at the end of four years of follow-up, compared to those with normal vitamin D levels.
Tiago Alexandre explains that vitamin D participates in the biochemical processes of mass maintenance and muscle contraction kinetics. “Thus, at lower concentrations, it favors the loss of muscle fibers, inhibits the contraction mechanism and prevents the repair and metabolism of muscle fibers, causing weakness”, he emphasized.
