Covid can remain active in some people for over 7 months: Study
Publicado em 28 janeiro 2022
Sao Paulo, Jan 28 : A team of international researchers have found that the novel Coronavirus can continue to be present in some human bodies upto 232 days.
Researchers from France’s Pasteur Institute, the University of Sao Paulo (USP) and Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Brazil conducted a study involving 38 Brazilian patients.
The patients were followed until they tested negative twice or three times consecutively by RT-PCR.
Of the 38 cases tracked, two men and a woman were [...]

Gravitational Action Of Sun And Moon Influences Behavior Of Animals And Plants, Study Shows
Publicado em 05 janeiro 2022The rhythms of activity in all biological organisms, both plants and animals, are closely linked to the gravitational tides created by the orbital mechanics of the Sun-Earth-Moon system. This truth has been somewhat neglected by scientific research but is foregrounded in a study by Cristiano de Mello Gallep at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and Daniel Robert at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. An article on the study is [...]ver notícia -
The study shows how waste can be converted into materials for advanced industries
Publicado em 09 dezembro 2021Between 118 and 138 million tons of organic waste are generated annually worldwide, with waste from the food production and distribution chain accounting for 100 million tons of the total. Only about 25% of all this biowaste is collected and recycled. The other 75% is simply thrown away, representing a huge loss of potential resources and major damage to the environment. These numbers are from a report published in 2018 by the European Environment Agency. Its statistics are the most recent [...]ver notícia -
Modified protein from rattlesnake venom permits development of drug to modulate blood clotting
Publicado em 01 dezembro 2021Researchers in Brazil and Belgium have developed a molecule of pharmaceutical interest from collinein-1, a protein found in rattlesnake venom. They used a technique called PEGylation to make the molecule, now called PEG-rCollinein-1, more stable in the organism and resistant to the immune system, obtaining a drug candidate to modulate blood clotting. An article reporting the results of the research has recently been published in the International Journal of Biological [...]ver notícia -
Scientists discover how forest fires influence rain cloud formation in the Amazon
Publicado em 27 outubro 2021A Brazilian study published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment shows how wildfires and forest burning for agriculture influence rain cloud formation in the Amazon. According to the authors, aerosols (tiny solid particles and liquid droplets emitted into the atmosphere by fire) hinder the freezing of cloud droplets when the atmosphere is humidified, but can also promote freezing when the atmosphere is dry. This alters the natural functioning of clouds and their typical height, [...]ver notícia -
Only one in four Western Roman emperors died of natural causes
Publicado em 17 outubro 2021The Roman Empire was ruled by 175 men, from Augustus (63 BCE-19 CE) to Constantine XI (1405-53), including the Eastern or Byzantine Empire after the split in 395 CE, but excluding those who did not rule in their own right because they were minors during regencies or co-emperors. Only 24.8% of the 69 rulers of the Western Empire died of natural causes. The rest died a violent death on the battlefield or in palace plots. Considering all 175, 30% were murdered, committed suicide or died in [...]ver notícia -
Electoral Cycles Influence Destruction Of Atlantic Rainforest Areas In Southern And Southeastern Brazil
Publicado em 23 setembro 2021A study conducted at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, and reported in an article published in the journal Conservation Letters, shows that destruction of the Atlantic Rainforest increases in election years. The researchers correlated data from the Electoral High Court (TSE) and MapBiomas, the Brazilian Annual Land Use and Land Cover Mapping Project, for 2,253 municipalities in the southern and southeastern regions covering the period 1991-2014. They [...]ver notícia -
New marmoset species discovered in Brazilian Amazon
Publicado em 13 agosto 2021A team of scientists has discovered a new marmoset species in the Brazilian Amazon. Schneider’s marmoset (Mico schneideri), described in the latest issue of the journal Scientific Reports, is named after professor Horacio Schneider, a pioneer and major contributor to the research of diversity and evolution of monkeys. The discovery was made by a team of researchers led by Rodrigo Costa Araújo, currently an associate researcher at Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. [...]ver notícia -
Tree falls during dry season in São Paulo City are due to poor management, study suggests
Publicado em 12 agosto 2021Trees fall every day in São Paulo, Brazil, the largest and most populous city in Latin America, but most tree falls occur in the rainy season owing mainly to the effects of temperature, strong winds and heavy rain. When trees fall in the dry season, the main direct cause is not weather but a lack of management and adequate conditions for the survival of street vegetation. These are the key findings of a studypublishedby a group of Brazilian researchers in the journalTrees - Structure [...]ver notícia -
Birds that disperse more types of seed have better evolutionary chances
Publicado em 12 agosto 2021More than 70% of plant species that produce flowers depend on birds to disperse their seeds. Birds feed on fruit from a wide array of different plants, and bird-plant interactions configure a welter of complex networks. A study conducted at the University of São Paulo’s Institute of Biosciences (IB-USP) in Brazil shows that the evolutionary stability of each bird species depends on the position it occupies in these networks, increasing in step with the number and centrality of [...]ver notícia
