Mapping World’s Fungi From Air Samples: Southern Cross Uni Joins Global Effort
Publicado em 16 julho 2024
A global study has found the key to mapping biodiversity has been staring us in the face the whole time: in the surrounding air.
Led by Finland’s University of Jyväskylä, the paper ‘Airborne DNA reveals predictable spatial and seasonal dynamics of fungi’ is published in the journal Nature.
Only a fraction of nature’s diversity, or species richness, is still known, especially when it comes to insects and fungi, both of which have millions of species still [...]

Surprising magnetic galaxy
Publicado em 11 janeiro 2024A team of astronomers including those from the University of Tokyo created the first-ever map of magnetic field structures within a spiral arm of our Milky Way galaxy. Previous studies on galactic magnetic fields only gave a very general picture, but the new study reveals that magnetic fields in the spiral arms of our galaxy break away from this general picture significantly and are tilted away from the galactic average by a high degree. The findings suggest magnetic fields strongly impact [...]ver notícia -
Amazon secrets unveiled
Publicado em 05 outubro 2023Cutting-edge technology has revealed the Amazonian rainforest hides thousands of records of ancient indigenous communities under its canopy, according to a study published in the journal Science. James Cook University’s Distinguished Professor Bill Laurance, a long-time Amazon expert, took part in the study. He said the Amazon is the world’s most diverse forest and according to the new study may also host more than 10,000 records of pre-Columbian earthworks – constructed [...]ver notícia -
Amazonian Rainforest Hides Thousands of Records of Ancient Indigenous Communities Under Its Forest Canopy, According to a Study Published in the Journal Science
Publicado em 05 outubro 2023The world’s most diverse forest, the Amazon, may also host more than 10,000 records of pre-Columbian earthworks (constructed prior to the arrival of Europeans), according to a new study. The new study combines cutting-edge remote sensing technology with archaeological data and advanced statistical modeling to estimate how many earthworks may still be hidden beneath the canopy of the Amazon rainforest and in which locations these structures are most likely to be found. The world’s [...]ver notícia -
Study links poor diet to 14 million cases of type 2 diabetes globally
Publicado em 17 abril 2023A research model of dietary intake in 184 countries, developed by researchers at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, estimates that poor diet contributed to over 14.1 million cases of type 2 diabetes in 2018, representing over 70% of new diagnoses globally. The analysis, which looked at data from 1990 and 2018, provides valuable insight into which dietary factors are driving type 2 diabetes burden by world region. The study was published April 17 in the [...]ver notícia -
Most powerful electric eel yet puts all other electric eels to shame
Publicado em 11 setembro 2019Say hello to two new species of electric eel, including one that can discharge up to 860 volts, the strongest of any known animal, researchers say. Electric eels send out an electrical discharge to stun prey. After analyzing data on 107 specimens from the Amazon in Brazil, Suriname, French Guiana and Guyana, researchers from São Paulo Research Foundation and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History concluded thatnaked-back knifefishshould be reclassified into two new [...]ver notícia
