Reduced activity of key enzyme linked to microcephaly in Zika-infected offspring
Publicado em 25 outubro 2023
Mice that were infected with zika virus during pregnancy and developed microcephaly displayed less activity of Ndel1, an enzyme that plays a key role in neuron proliferation, differentiation and migration during embryo development, according to an article published in the Journal of Neurochemistry.
The discovery has been patented and could serve in future as a basis for the development of a biomarker for early diagnosis of microcephaly in human babies infected with zika during the embryonic [...]

Study demonstrates antimicrobial action of polyalthic acid from copaiba oil
Publicado em 18 outubro 2023Polyalthic acid from copaiba oil is an effective antibacterial and should be used to develop alternative medications that can contribute to the effort to overcome antimicrobial resistance, according to a new study. Polyalthic acid from copaiba oil is an effective antibacterial and should be used to develop alternative medications that can contribute to the effort to overcome antimicrobial resistance (“superbugs”), according to an article by researchers based in Brazil [...]ver notícia -
Novel biomaterial delivers medication directly to fish gut
Publicado em 12 outubro 2023SÃO PAULO.- A novel biomaterial developed at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) in Brazil can help solve two problems at once. As a bioparticle, it can act as a drug carrier, delivering medication directly to the gastrointestinal tract of fish in order to circumvent resistance to conventional antibiotics, for example. In addition, it is administered orally in powder form and is highly palatable to fish, increasing the probability of effective treatment while at the same [...]ver notícia -
Study IDs six drugs that can be repurposed for treatment of toxoplasmosis
Publicado em 05 outubro 2023Scientists are looking for new ways to treat toxoplasmosis, an infectious disease that affects more than a third of the world population. One of the most recent advances is reported in an article published in the journal PLOS ONE by researchers at the Jundiaí Medical School (FMJ) in São Paulo state, Brazil. The group screened 160 existing drugs to explore their potential repurposing to combat toxoplasmosis. The drugs belonged to the COVID Box, a library of compounds [...]ver notícia -
Oral health deteriorates before and after bariatric surgery
Publicado em 07 setembro 2023Oral health deteriorates in morbidly obese people on a diet in preparation for bariatric surgery and patients who have undergone the procedure, with increasing caries, gingivitis and periodontitis. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by researchers at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) in Brazil. Articles on the study are published in the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation and Clinical Oral Investigations, stressing the importance of participation by a dentist in the [...]ver notícia -
Researchers track yeast population dynamics in fuel bioethanol production
Publicado em 31 agosto 2023Researchers at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil, in collaboration with colleagues at Harvard University in the United States, have conducted an innovative study of the DNA and population dynamics of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the yeast used to produce fuel ethanol from sugarcane by plants throughout Brazil, with the aim of finding routes to more stable, consistent and predictable fermentation performance. The study was based on whole-genome sequencing and metagenomics, the [...]ver notícia -
Sanitized ready-to-eat salad may contain disease-causing bacteria
Publicado em 30 agosto 2023A review article published in the journal Foods describes a study that provides an overview of research on minimally processed vegetables (MPVs), with a specific focus on the Brazilian market. Data is presented on hygiene indicators and pathogenic microorganisms, especially Escherichia coli (the main indicator of faecal contamination), Salmonella spp., and Listeria monocytogenes, with prevalence rates ranging from 0.7% to 100%, 0.6% to 26.7%, and 0.2% to 33.3% respectively. The article [...]ver notícia -
Glitter impairs growth of cyanobacteria, study shows
Publicado em 23 agosto 2023A study conducted by researchers affiliated with the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil concluded that particles of glitter can hinder the growth of organisms at the base of aquatic ecosystems, such as cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). These play a key role in the biogeochemical cycles of water and soil, as well as being eaten by other organisms. An article on the study is published in the journal Aquatic Toxicology. Ubiquitous in makeup, nail polish, holiday decorations, [...]ver notícia -
Co-infection by novel species of parasite found in visceral leishmaniasis patient
Publicado em 09 agosto 2023The first case of concomitant visceral leishmaniasis and non-ulcerated cutaneous leishmaniasis in the same patient has been reported recently by researchers at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) in São Paulo state, Brazil. The patient, a nine-year-old boy admitted to the hospital run by the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS), was infected by Leishmania infantum, a protozoan parasite that causes visceral leishmaniasis, and by another parasite of an as-yet unconfirmed [...]ver notícia -
Engineered Probiotic Developed to Treat Multiple Sclerosis
Publicado em 09 agosto 2023Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a founding member of the Mass General Brigham healthcare system, have designed a probiotic to suppress autoimmunity in the brain, which occurs when the immune system attacks the cells of the central nervous system. Autoimmunity in the brain is at the core of several diseases, including multiple sclerosis. In a new study, researchers demonstrated the treatment’s potential using preclinical models of these diseases, [...]ver notícia
