Leishmania Parasite Manipulates Body's Defenses To Continue Replication
Publicado em 24 maio 2023
In an article published in the journal Nature Communications, researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil show how protozoans of the genus Leishmania that cause leishmaniasis manipulate a protein that plays an essential role in the organism’s defense in order to continue to replicate, preventing the body from vanquishing the disease.
The findings of the study reported in the article offer hope for the development of novel treatments for the disease. Some 30,000 [...]

3D Printing Filaments Made From Recycled Coffee Pods
Publicado em 03 maio 2023An article published in the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering brings good news for coffee buffs: the plastic in used coffee pods can be recycled to make filament for 3D printers, minimizing its environmental impact. The solution was successfully tested by research groups in Brazil at the Federal University of São Carlos (USFCar) and the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), and in the United Kingdom at Manchester Metropolitan University [...]ver notícia -
Antioxidant "Boosts" Sunscreen Efficacy
Publicado em 06 abril 2023An article published in the journal Cosmetics reports an investigation of the effects of including rosmarinic acid, an active antioxidant, in a sunscreen along with two conventional ultraviolet light filters, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (against UVB) and avobenzone (against UVA). The research group increased the sunscreen’s photoprotective efficacy by adding rosmarinic acid at 0.1%, a very small proportion compared with those of conventional UV filters. They believe their findings [...]ver notícia -
Pesticides in Food Detected Quickly and Cheaply by Paper-Based Sensor
Publicado em 31 março 2023Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil have developed a kraft paper-based electrochemical sensor that can detect traces of pesticides in fruit and vegetables in real time when coupled to an electronic device. In an apple or cabbage, for example, it can detect carbendazim, a fungicide widely used in Brazil despite being banned. The research behind the invention was supported by FAPESP via three projects (18/22214-6, 19/13514-9 and 22/03758-0) and involved groups at [...]ver notícia -
Study Elucidates at Cellular Level How Exercise Preserves Fitness During Aging
Publicado em 30 março 2023Regular exercise can guarantee quality of life and longevity, specialists agree. However, exactly how exercise influences the functioning of muscle cells is poorly understood. A study conducted at the University of São Paulo’s Biomedical Sciences Institute (ICB-USP) helps understand at the cellular level how physical activity contributes to fitness during the aging process. The study was supported by FAPESP. An article describing it is published in [...]ver notícia -
Specially Modified Yeast Could Lead to More Efficient Production of 2G Ethanol
Publicado em 28 março 2023A Brazilian study paves the way to increased efficiency of second-generation (2G) ethanol production based on the discovery of novel targets for metabolic engineering in a more robust strain of industrial yeast. An article on the study is published in the journal Scientific Reports. The databases compiled by the authors are at the disposal of the scientific community in the repository of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), which is a member of the Dataverse Project, an international [...]ver notícia -
Stunning Images Reveal How Lightning Rods Work
Publicado em 14 março 2023With a high-speed camera and the luck of being in the right place at the right time, physicist Marcelo Saba, a researcher at Brazil’s National Space Research Institute (INPE), and PhD candidate Diego Rhamon obtained a unique image of lightning strikes showing details of the connections to nearby buildings. The image is so special that it appeared on the cover of the 28 December 2022 issue of Geophysical Research Letters (GRL) – one of the most important scientific journals in the [...]ver notícia -
Brewer’s Yeast May Prevent Airway Inflammation in Asthma
Publicado em 23 fevereiro 2023A recent study has suggested a daily dose of brewer’s yeast – a strain used to make the Brazilian spirit cachaça – may help to protect against airway inflammation observed in asthma. The research, conducted in mice, is published in Probiotics and Antimicrobial Proteins. Getting the most benefit from probiotics Asthma is a common chronic disease that affects around 334 million people around the world. It often manifests in childhood where it impacts the lungs, [...]ver notícia -
Mosquito’s Chromosomes Organize as “Liquid Crystals”
Publicado em 10 fevereiro 2023When it comes to DNA, one pesky mosquito turns out to be a rebel among species. Researchers at Rice University’s Center for Theoretical Biological Physics (CTBP) are among the pioneers of a new approach to studying DNA. Instead of focusing on chromosomes as linear sequences of genetic code, they’re looking for clues on how their folded 3D shapes might determine gene expression and regulation. For most living things, their [...]ver notícia -
Performance of Bioprinted Artificial Skin Shown To Be Equivalent to Conventionally Produced Model
Publicado em 30 janeiro 2023Bioengineered artificial skin has become an increasingly important and reliable platform for researchers to test the safety and efficacy of drugs and cosmetics. It can be produced on a large scale and is a good substitute for animal testing. The most promising technologies for production of in vitro models include 3D bioprinting. Because it is recent, however, its performance has yet to be sufficiently validated in comparison with traditional manually produced models. This was the main aim of a [...]ver notícia
