Neglected Diseases Continue to Require Attention Despite Progress
Publicado em
Although neglected diseases account for 11 percent of the global disease burden, they are targeted by only a small proportion of the new drugs developed every year.
Between January 2012 and September 2018, a total of 256 new drugs entered the market, but only eight (3.1 percent) were designed to treat neglected diseases. This value exceeds the proportion for 1975-99, which was 1.1 percent, but falls short of the 4.3 percent mark recorded for 2000-11.

Chemical Probe can Regulate Signaling Pathway and Block Cell Invasion by Arboviruses
Publicado emCells in humans and other vertebrates, as well as invertebrates, have to signal pathways that play essential roles in embryo development, cell proliferation, and tissue structuring. Dysregulation in one of these signaling pathways, known as the beta-catenin-dependent Wnt signaling pathway, can cause embryo malformation and diseases such as breast cancer and cervical cancer. Researchers at the Center for Medicinal Chemistry (CQMED) have discovered a way to regulate this pathway. Created with [...]ver notícia -
Novel Technique Expands Industrial Use of Advanced High-Strength Steel Alloys
Publicado em 18 dezembro 2017The automotive industry’s demand for high-performance alloys known as advanced high-strength (AHS) steels has increased in recent years owing to increasingly tough passenger safety, vehicle performance and fuel economy requirements. Characterized by improved formability and collision resilience compared to conventional steel grades, high-strength steels have been used in critical safety locations in car body structures to absorb energy from impacts. However, some of these high-strength [...]ver notícia -
Quantum effects explain changes in nanometric circuit electron flows
Publicado em 11 dezembro 2017Transistors capable of functioning with an electrical current consisting of the passage of a single electron at each point in time are on the horizon for research in the field of information technology. By associating the 0/1 binary with electron transit or non-transit, the device can drastically improve space usage and reduce power consumption in future computers. This option is not yet economically feasible, but it already exists in the laboratory. An experiment with a device of this kind [...]ver notícia -
Length of stay in neonatal ICU can affect behavior of premature babies
Publicado em 30 novembro 2017A study conducted by researchers at the University of São Paulo’s Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine (FMRP-USP) in Brazil, with support from the Sao Paulo Research Foundation – FAPESP , indicates that length of stay in the ICU is the factor that best explains some preterm babies’ behavioral problems relating to emotional regulation, regardless of the degree of prematurity and the presence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). According to the research, [...]ver notícia -
Software optimizes train circulation control in real time
Publicado em 29 novembro 2017Rail transportation is costly to operate and requires heavy fixed-capital investment in track construction and maintenance. As demand grows, rail system operators can invest in network expansion by building new lines or duplicating existing tracks. However, this strategy is costly because of the long distances traveled by trains. An alternative is to seek solutions that optimize the use of implemented resources by the efficient planning of train overtakings or crossings, stoppage times, track [...]ver notícia
