Astronomers observe rings forming around icy celestial body Chiron
Publicado em 15 de outubro de 2025
Audio By Carbonatix By Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The rings of Saturn are among the wonders of our solar system, with a diameter of roughly 175,000 miles (280,000 kilometers) as they encircle the giant planet. But smaller celestial bodies in the solar system also boast ring systems that are impressive in their own right, even if their scale is not as grand.
Scientists said they have observed for the first time a ring system in the process of formation and evolution, consisting of four [...]

Oldest-known ant preserved in 113 million-year-old Brazilian fossil
Publicado em 25 abril 2025Audio By Carbonatix By Will Dunham (Reuters) -Scientists have identified the fossilized remains of the oldest-known ant – a winged insect with fearsome scythe-like jaws that lived about 113 million years ago during the age of dinosaurs and was preserved in limestone unearthed in northeastern Brazil. The species, called Vulcanidris cratensis, is part of a lineage called hell ants – named for their demonic-looking jaws – that prospered in a wide geographical range during the [...]ver notícia -
Genome study reveals prehistoric Ethiopian origins of coffee
Publicado em 16 abril 2024Researchers now have unlocked the genome of the Arabica species and traced its origins to a natural mating between two other coffee species an estimated 610,000 to one million years ago in the forests of Ethiopia. That makes this species older than our own species Homo sapiens, which arose in Africa about 300,000 years ago. The researchers sequenced the genomes of 39 Arabica varieties, including a specimen from the 18th century, to create the highest quality genome to date of this species, [...]ver notícia -
Your morning coffee may be hundreds of thousands of years old
Publicado em 15 abril 2024That coffee you slurped this morning? It’s 600,000 years old. Using genes from coffee plants around the world, researchers built a family tree for the world’s most popular type of coffee, known to scientists as Coffea arabica and to coffee lovers simply as “arabica.” The researchers, hoping to learn more about the plants to better protect them from pests and climate change, found that the species emerged around 600,000 years ago through natural crossbreeding of two [...]ver notícia -
Twisted magnetic field observed around Milky Way's central black hole
Publicado emBy Will Dunham WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Astronomers on Wednesday announced that they have detected a strong and organized magnetic field twisted in a spiral pattern around the Milky Way's supermassive black hole, revealing previously unknown qualities of the immensely powerful object lurking at the center of our galaxy. WASHINGTON, March 27 (Reuters) - Astronomers on Wednesday announced that they have detected a strong and organized magnetic field twisted in a spiral pattern around [...]ver notícia -
Amazon forest carbon emissions skyrocketed under Bolsonaro, study shows
Publicado em 24 agosto 2023(Reuters) – Brazilian space research center INPE said on Wednesday that carbon emissions in the Amazon forest soared in 2019 and 2020 compared to the previous decade due to poor enforcement of environmental protection policies. The forest’s carbon emissions amounted to 0.44 billion metric tons in 2019 and 0.52 billion metric tons in 2020, compared to an annual average of 0.24 billion metric tons from 2010-2018, according to the INPE study published in Nature magazine. The [...]ver notícia -
Brazilian researchers find ‘terrifying’ plastic rocks on remote island
Publicado emTRINDADE ISLAND, Brazil (Reuters) – The geology of Brazil’s volcanic Trindade Island has fascinated scientists for years, but the discovery of rocks made from plastic debris in this remote turtle refuge is sparking alarm. Melted plastic has become intertwined with rocks on the island, located 1,140 km (708 miles) from the southeastern state of Espirito Santo, which researchers say is evidence of humans’ growing influence over the earth’s geological [...]ver notícia -
Coronavirus can transform pancreas cell function; certain genes may protect an infected person’s spouse
Publicado em 29 setembro 2021(Reuters) – The following is a summary of some recent studies on COVID-19. They include research that warrants further study to corroborate the findings and that have yet to be certified by peer review. Coronavirus transforms pancreas cell function When the coronavirus infects cells, it not only impairs their activity but can also change their function, new findings suggest. For example, when insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas become infected with the virus, they not only [...]ver notícia -
An average of 15% of Brazilians have COVID-19 antibodies, study finds
Publicado em 26 maio 2021An average of 15% of Brazil’s 210 million people have COVID-19 antibodies, researchers announced on Wednesday. The study, backed by the Sao Paulo state government’s research foundation (FAPESP) and Federal University of Sao Paulo (Unifesp), was conducted up to the end of April when contagion was on the rise. Researchers found that the level of antibodies varied greatly across the country. For example, in the northeastern state of Ceara, 9.89% of people had antibodies, compared [...]ver notícia -
Jolting discovery: Powerful new electric eel found
Publicado em 11 setembro 2019WASHINGTON (AP) — Researchers report two newly discovered species of electric eels in South America, one of which can deliver a bigger jolt than any other known animal. The researchers collected 107 eels in four countries and found differences in their DNA, along with minor physical variations. One species had the ability to generate 860 volts of electricity, more than the 650 volts discharged by the only previously identified type of electric eel. While 250 species of fish in South [...]ver notícia
