Southern hemisphere could see up to 30% less rain at end of the century
Publicado em 22 setembro 2020
Projections based on climate models for the mid-Pliocene Warm Period (about 3 million years ago) suggest that countries in the tropical and subtropical southern hemisphere, including Brazil, may face longer droughts in the future. Annual rainfall may decrease as much as 30% compared with current levels.
One of the main variables considered in this scenario is a rise of 3 °C in the global average temperature, which may happen between 2050 and the end of the century unless the effects of [...]

Study investigates a critical transition in water that remains liquid far below 0 °C
Publicado em 15 novembro 2019Water can remain liquid at temperatures far below 0 °C. This phase is known as supercooled and is a current focus for scientific research. A theoretical model developed at São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Brazil shows that in supercooled water, there is a critical point at which properties such as thermal expansion and compressibility exhibit anomalous behavior. Led by Mariano de Souza, a professor in the Physics Department of UNESP’s Institute of Geosciences and Exact [...]ver notícia -
Protecting native vegetation on rural properties yields Brazil USD 1.5 trillion per year
Publicado em 16 outubro 2019The 270 million hectares of native vegetation preserved by rural landowners (Legal Reserves and unprotected areas) yield Brazil the equivalent of some USD 1.5 trillion (BRL 6 trillion) per year in ecosystem services, such as crop pollination, pest control, water security, rain production and soil quality maintenance. The calculation is part of a paper published in the journal Perspectives in Ecology and Conservation and endorsed by 407 scientist signatories, including 371 researchers [...]ver notícia -
Amazon Tall Tower Observatory, used to investigate links between tropical forest & global climate
Publicado em 06 fevereiro 2019Conducting science in the Amazon requires not only surmounting major logistical challenges but also climbing stairs – many stairs, almost 1,500 in a single climb if possible. The effort is worthwhile, as it has led to discoveries about the impact of climate change on the Amazon and of the Amazon rainforest’s impact on the global climate. The staircase in question is part of the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO), which at 325 m is almost the same height as the Eiffel Tower [...]ver notícia -
Social and environmental costs of hydropower are underestimated, study shows
Publicado em 11 janeiro 2019While most developed countries have reduced the construction of large dams for the production of electricity in recent decades, developing countries, including Brazil, have embarked on even more massive hydropower developments. These countries have not accounted for the environmental impacts of large dams, which include deforestation and the loss of biodiversity, or the social consequences, such as the displacement of thousands of people and the economic damages they suffer. These effects [...]ver notícia
