Lipid produced by organism helps control blood sugar
Publicado em 30 setembro 2019Researchers based in Brazil, the United States and Germany have discovered that 12-HEPE, a lipid produced in response to cold by brown adipose tissue in the human body, helps reduce blood sugar. The results of their experiments with mice pave the way for new treatments for diabetes. The group also observed that a drug used to treat urinary dysfunction increases the amount of 12-HEPE released into the bloodstream in human patients. The study is published in Cell Metabolism. Its first [...]ver notícia -
Compounds extracted from Brazilian savannah plant combat fungus that causes candidiasis
Publicado em 17 setembro 2019Fungi of the genus Candida cause thrush and candidiasis, a fairly common disease in humans. It can be lethal to individuals with low immunity, especially when they are hospitalized. Although the drug most widely used to combat the disease is effective in most cases, some varieties of the fungus are drug-resistant. Compounds that combat two species of Candida have now been isolated from a plant by researchers based in Brazil and Spain. The plant is Mimosa [...]ver notícia -
Most powerful electric eel yet puts all other electric eels to shame
Publicado em 11 setembro 2019Say hello to two new species of electric eel, including one that can discharge up to 860 volts, the strongest of any known animal, researchers say. Electric eels send out an electrical discharge to stun prey. After analyzing data on 107 specimens from the Amazon in Brazil, Suriname, French Guiana and Guyana, researchers from São Paulo Research Foundation and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History concluded thatnaked-back knifefishshould be reclassified into two new [...]ver notícia -
Newly identified electric eel is the most powerful ever found, say scientists
Publicado em 11 setembro 2019Prepare yourself for a shock of the record-breaking variety – scientists have identified two new electric eel species, and one of them can put out a zap that’s stronger than any other animal we know about. The supercharged species is Electrophorus voltai, and it can discharge 860 V of electricity in a single shock, some way ahead of the 650 V shock that electric eels are normally associated with. It’s definitely enough to cause a human-sized creature some serious [...]ver notícia -
Electric Eel Species With Most Powerful Shock Ever Discovered in Amazon
Publicado em 11 setembro 2019A new species of electric eel with the most powerful shock of any animal ever discovered has been found in the Amazon. The creature is one of three species now confirmed to exist. For the last 250 years, since electric eels were first identified, it was thought there was just one species in the genus. In a study published in Nature Communications, researchers led by C. David de Santana, from the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, analyzed over 100 fish collected across [...]ver notícia
