According to a recent study conducted globally, high consumption of ultra-processed food (UPF) can escalate the risk of early death. Each additional 10% intake of UPFs, such as bread, cakes, and ready meals, increases an individual’s risk of not reaching the age of 75 by 3%.
Intakes of UPF are alarmingly related with early deaths around the world. In countries including the US and England, UPF is associated with one in seven premature deaths. Each year, UPFs are linked to 124,107 premature deaths in the US and 17,781 in England, according to this research performed in eight countries.
The study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, provides a clear connection between ultra-processed food consumption and all-cause mortality, with UPF accounting for the highest proportion of premature deaths in England (13.8%), followed closely by the US (13.7%), and Canada (10.9%). Eduardo Augusto Fernandes Nilson, the lead investigator of the study from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Brazil, notes that it’s not just the high levels of fat, salt, sugar, but also additives in UPFs that contribute to their health-damaging effects.
The intake of UPFs in populations accounted for up to 53.4% in England and 54.5% in the US. Nilson explains that the consumption of UPFs is harmful beyond their high content of critical nutrients; the changes in food during industrial processing and the use of artificial ingredients are a major concern. As a result, the researchers called for stricter regulation on the marketing and sale of foods, including implementing taxes on UPF products.
