Experiments Show Infection of Visceral Fat Cells May Contribute to Severe COVID-19
Publicado em 20 dezembro 2022
Two types of adipocytes (fat cells) were infected in the laboratory: one obtained from human stem cells isolated from subcutaneous tissue and the other differentiated from stem cells taken from visceral fatty tissue.
Experiments show that visceral fat – fat around the liver, intestines, and other organs, considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure – contributes more to severe COVID-19 than subcutaneous fat (under the skin, as in [...]

COVID-19 epidemiology can be estimated using blood donation samples
Publicado em 20 dezembro 2022An article published in the journal eLife reports a study in which researchers concluded that the proportion of the population previously infected by SARS-CoV-2 (infection-induced seroprevalence) can be estimated using blood donation samples. The findings offer a sort of “portrait” of the first year of the COVID-19 epidemic in Brazil. According to the authors, their novel methodology can also be used to track and estimate collective immunity to other infectious diseases. The [...]ver notícia -
New Research Reveals That COVID Virus Alters RNA in Infected Cells
Publicado em 13 dezembro 2022A new study describes how the functioning of RNA changes in cells infected by SARS-CoV-2, the COVID-19 virus. The findings provide clues as to how different variants can escape the immune system, and serve as a basis for the development of novel treatments. For the first time, scientists have shown that infection by SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, changes the functioning of host cell RNA. The researchers, from the Federal University of São Paulo [...]ver notícia -
Very Hot, Very Cold Days Tied to Higher CVD Mortality
Publicado em 13 dezembro 2022Extremely hot and extremely cold temperatures were associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular mortality in an analysis of data from countries around the world. “Many environmental exposures are set to be amplified by climate change,” Barrak Alahmad, MD, MPH, PhD, a research fellow at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard University in Boston and faculty member at the College of Public Health at Kuwait University in Kuwait City, told theheart.org | [...]ver notícia -
New biosensing platform detects SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in five minutes
Publicado em 29 novembro 2022Rapid, cheap and accurate tests continue to be essential for epidemiological surveillance and for health services to monitor and contain the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Brazilian scientists have contributed to endeavors in this field by developing an electrochemical immunosensor that detects antibodies against the virus. The innovation is described in an article published recently in the journal ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering In search of a novel diagnostic method, the group opted for [...]ver notícia -
New Method Converts Greenhouse Gas Into Fuel
Publicado em 01 outubro 2022The new method converts methane gas into liquid methanol. A team of researchers has successfully converted methane into methanol using light and scattered transition metals such as copper in a process known as photo-oxidation. The reaction was the best achieved to date for converting methane gas into liquid fuel at ambient temperature and pressure (25 °C and 1 bar, respectively), according to a study published in the journal Chemical Communications The term bar as a pressure unit comes [...]ver notícia -
Over 200 Million Years Old – Scientists Discover Africa's Oldest Known Dinosaur
Publicado em 27 setembro 2022During two digs in Zimbabwe in 2017 and 2019, a graduate student from Virginia Tech discovered and unearthed the fossil with the assistance of other paleontologists. A new, early dinosaur has been found and named by an international team of paleontologists under the direction of Virginia Tech. The skeleton was discovered by a graduate student in the Virginia Tech Department of Geosciences and other paleontologists over the course of two excavations, in 2017 and 2019. Astonishingly, most [...]ver notícia -
Scientists Discover That a Certain Nutrient Promotes Anti-Aging
Publicado em 04 setembro 2022According to the study, the amino acid taurine could be employed in anti-aging therapies. Our cells produce potentially toxic by-products known as “free radicals” when they break down the oxygen we breathe and the food we consume each day in order to exist. Some of these molecules carry out important biological functions, but if there are too many of them, the internal cell structures can be harmed, impairing the cells' ability to function and possibly resulting in chronic [...]ver notícia -
Harvard Scientists Discover That Cold Temperatures Could Help You Lose Weight
Publicado em 02 agosto 2022Brown adipose tissue is activated by the cold to release anti-inflammatory compounds. Over 40% of adult Americans are obese, a complicated condition that raises the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and several types of cancer. By creating low-grade chronic inflammation and the buildup of immune cells in insulin-sensitive tissues, obesity is one factor that can contribute to other health issues. Scientists believe that reversing, or “resolving,” this chronic inflammation might [...]ver notícia -
Un diminuto pez del Amazonas descubierto en un solo arroyo podría extinguirse a nada de su descubrimiento
Publicado em 18 maio 2022Two newly discovered species of Amazonian fish are ALREADY facing ‘imminent extinction’ due to deforestation in the Brazilian rainforest, experts warn Scientists uncovered the new species roughly 25 miles north of the city of Apuí One called P. callipterus has striking red-orange fins and dark spots near its tail The other, P. rhizophilus, is yellow and small enough to be defined as ‘miniature’ Two species of Amazonian fish are facing extinction due to [...]ver notícia
