Copper-based catalysts efficiently turn carbon dioxide into methane
Publicado em 28 setembro 2023Technologies for removing carbon from the atmosphere keep improving, but solutions for what to do with the carbon once it's captured are harder to come by. The lab of Rice University materials scientist Pulickel Ajayan and collaborators developed a way to wrest the carbon from carbon dioxide and affix it to hydrogen atoms, forming methane ⎯ a valuable fuel and industrial feedstock. According to the study published in Advanced Materials , the method relies on electrolysis and catalysts [...]ver notícia -
Brazilian scientists reveal method of converting methane gas into liquid methanol
Publicado em 22 agosto 2022The strategy was tested at the Federal University of São Carlos. The conversion took place under ambient temperature and pressure conditions, which could enable methane, a potent greenhouse gas, to be used to produce fuel A group of researchers has succeeded in converting methane into methanol using light and dispersed transition metals such as copper… Full [...]ver notícia -
Edible, biodegradable, anti-microbial plastic boasts higher tensile strength than petroleum-based plastic
Publicado emDisposal of food packaging is a major cause of environmental pollution worldwide. More than 350 million metric tons of plastic are produced every year, and 85% of the garbage dumped in the oceans is plastic, according to estimates. Brazil is the fourth-largest producer, accounting for some 11 million metric tons per year. To make matters worse, most plastic packaging is derived from non-renewables such as petroleum. Given all these drawbacks, reducing the use of fossil fuels to produce [...]ver notícia -
Scientists use “green” solvent and natural pigment to produce bioplastic
Publicado emScientists based in Brazil and Portugal have developed an environmentally sustainable process to produce biodegradable plastic using pigment extracted from yeast by “green” solvents. In an article published in the journal Green Chemistry, they show that this biodegradable plastic could in future be used in smart packaging with antioxidant and anti-microbial properties. With similar applications to those of conventional plastics derived from oil, gas and coal, which take hundreds [...]ver notícia
