Exposure to Cannabinoids in Pregnancy Increases Newborn Mortality and Respiratory Problems
Publicado em 25 abril 2023
Consumption of cannabis (marijuana) or derivatives during pregnancy can cause respiratory problems for the baby, such as impaired control of breathing and diminished sensitivity to carbon dioxide, both of which favour sudden infant death syndrome. These are the main findings of a study conducted in Brazil and reported in an article published in the British Journal of Pharmacology.
The authors are researchers at São Paulo State University (UNESP) and the University of São Paulo [...]

Researchers identify gene mutation capable of regulating pain
Publicado emPain afflicts at least 1.5 billion people worldwide, and despite the availability of various painkilling drugs, not all forms of pain are treatable. Moreover, pain medications can have side effects such as dependence and tolerance, especially in the case of morphine and other opioids. In search of novel painkillers, researchers at Butantan Institute’s Special Pain and Signaling Laboratory (LEDS) in São Paulo, Brazil, studied TRPV1, a sensory neuron receptor that captures noxious [...]ver notícia -
Daily Rhythm Detected For Cerebral Blood Flow In Stroke Patients
Publicado em 17 fevereiro 2023Washington: Strokes are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and globally. Several environmental and biological factors are known to influence stroke risk and outcome. A new study led by investigators from Brigham and Women's Hospital, a founding member of the Mass General Brigham healthcare system, analyzed the cerebral blood flow (CBF) regulation of individuals who had experienced strokes. The team found that cerebral autoregulation (CA) -- one of the key [...]ver notícia -
Children of Overprotective Parents Tend to Die Younger, Study Suggests
Publicado em 06 fevereiro 2023Men who had an overprotective father and little autonomy during childhood may run a 12% higher risk of dying before their 80th birthday. On the other hand, for women who were well cared for by their mothers during childhood, the risk may decrease by 14%. Interestingly, the research also showed that men who lived with only one parent in childhood had a 179% higher risk of dying [...]ver notícia -
Cognitive-Behavioural Approach to Treatment of Obesity Yields Significant Results
Publicado em 18 maio 2021Quality of life relating to physical and mental health can be a key element in the treatment of obese adults. For this reason, interdisciplinary clinical measures including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) may produce more significant outcomes for these people, reducing not just weight but also symptoms of depression. This is the main conclusion of a study conducted in Brazil by the Obesity Research Group at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) in Santos, São Paulo [...]ver notícia -
Researchers Revise Indicator of Mobility Limitation in Older Adults
Publicado em 16 abril 2021Ageing entails a loss of muscle mass and strength, which in some cases impairs mobility, hinders walking or performance of day-to-day tasks, and exposes older people to the risk of falls and hospitalisations. In clinical practice, handgrip measurement is the most widely used method to identify loss of overall muscular strength in older people. Values below 26kg for men and 16kg for women have for some time been considered an indication of risk-associated weakness, but these parameters are [...]ver notícia -
Scientists Seek Faster Route to Treat Depression
Publicado em 03 janeiro 2021Treatment of depression faces two main challenges. The first is that almost 50% of patients do not respond well to existing antidepressants. The second is that conventional medications take a relatively long time – around three to five weeks – to have the desired effect. A group of researchers affiliated with the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil set out to tackle the second problem by using epigenetic modulators to try to ‘erase’ the consequences of stress.
