JAKARTA – Pregnant mother which infected with Covid-19 higher risk of getting preeclampsia, pregnancy complications characterized by high blood pressure persistent, usually in the second half of pregnancy or soon after delivery.

Reporting from Medical Xpress, Tuesday (7/9) this disorder can cause serious problems for both mother and baby. This is based on an article with review findings published in the journal Clinical Science.

Researchers analyzed a large amount of published data and concluded that the existence of Covid-19 in maternal organisms can cause changes in levels of the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a protein that binds virus to attack cells, and impair the function of systems that depend on ACE2 to regulate blood pressure.

In addition to functioning as a viral receptor, ACE2 plays a key role in establishing blood flow in the placenta and in the cardiovascular adaptations that occur during pregnancy.

“Based on the findings of studies conducted to date on SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnant women and the role of ACE2 in the placenta, it can be concluded that pregnant women are at higher risk of contracting COVID-19 than nonpregnant women,” said Nayara Azinheira Nobrega Cruz, author of the study. the first research.

“In addition, pregnant women with this disease are more prone to preeclampsia and premature birth,” he continued.

ACE2 plays a very important adaptive role in the maternal and fetal circulatory systems, and in placentation. However, because it is also a receptor for corona virus, it increases the risk of placenta in pregnant patients with Covid-19, because the organs become targets of the virus, in addition to the lungs, kidneys, and heart.

“Our review shows that responses vary widely from patient to patient, and manifestations take different forms,” explains Mariane Bertagnolli, lead author of the study.
