In addition to functioning as a viral receptor, ACE2 plays a key role in establishing blood flow in the placenta and in the cardiovascular adaptations that occur during pregnancy.
“Based on the findings of studies conducted to date on SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnant women and the role of ACE2 in the placenta, it can be concluded that pregnant women are at higher risk of contracting COVID-19 than nonpregnant women,” said Nayara Azinheira Nobrega Cruz, author of the study. the first research.
