A supportive Brazilian developed a role that manages to inactivate the coronavirus, the material has silver and silica microparticles incorporated in its structure. The product is made by Nanox with support from the FAPESP Innovative Research in Small Businesses Program (PIPE).

The paper was able to eliminate 99,9% of the virus particles from the Covid-19 within 10 minutes of contact. “Paper is capable of inactivating other viruses, in addition to bacteria and fungi,” says Luiz Gustavo Pagotto Simões, director of Nanox to the FAPESP Agency.

Paper is able to inactivate the coronavirus

The production process involves the introduction of microparticles during paper making. This maintains the ability to inactivate the virus even if the surface is exposed to water and other liquids. The effect is only affected in case of corrosion or physical damage to the material.

The role capable of inactivating the coronavirus works by putting the particles in contact with silver. “The virus comes into contact with silver and undergoes an oxidation process, which breaks down its protective membrane”, completes Simões.

The material can be used in the production of labels and boxes, which would be safe against the disease, as the paper manages to inactivate the coronavirus. The product can be used in delivery services, boxes and other types of packaging.
