Brazilian scientists design innovative heart valve
Publicado em 12 abril 2024
In Brazil, researchers from the University of São Paulo (USP) and the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) are trying to perfect the Wheatley aortic valve, a device that could improve the lives of millions of people affected by aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic valve opening that blocks the flow of blood from the left ventricle to the aorta.
Aortic stenosis is common among the elderly, and in severe cases, the only viable alternative to improve the patient’s quality [...]

World’s largest epilepsy study reveals ‘genetic architecture’ and points to new therapies
Publicado em- By Luciana Constantino , Agência FAPESP - Considered the largest genetic study of epilepsy in the world, a study published in the journal Nature Genetics reveals specific alterations in DNA that signal a greater risk of the brain disorder. Identifying these alterations will improve diagnosis and advance the possibility of new treatments for the disease. The researchers identified 26 different areas (loci) of the genome that are linked to epilepsy, with 29 genes thought to play [...]ver notícia -
Study maps main genes involved in immune response to infection by dengue virus
Publicado emBy comparing data for the immune response to natural infection by dengue virus to data for activation of the immune system by dengue vaccines, researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) have identified molecular markers that could be used in the development of novel vaccines and treatments for dengue. They also reiterated the efficacy of two vaccines already available on the market: Q-Denga, manufactured by Takeda Pharma (Japan) and now being distributed by the national health [...]ver notícia -
Butantan Institute’s dengue vaccine protects 79.6% of those vaccinated, study shows
Publicado em 08 fevereiro 2024A single-dose dengue vaccine produced by Butantan Institute in São Paulo state (Brazil) prevents development of the disease in 79.6% of those vaccinated, according to an article published today (February 1) in The New England Journal of Medicine. Called Butantan-DV, the vaccine contains attenuated versions of all four dengue virus serotypes. The results of the ongoing Phase 3 trial show that it is safe and effective for all age groups between 2 and 59, and for people [...]ver notícia -
Biodegradable sensor monitors levels of pesticides via direct contact with surface of fruit and vegetables
Publicado em 31 janeiro 2024Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) in Brazil have developed a sustainable sensor that can be placed directly on the surface of a vegetable or fruit to detect the presence of pesticides. Known for this reason as “plant-wearable”, it is made of cellulose acetate, a material derived from wood pulp. The device has the potential to help assure food safety in a world that increasingly suffers from a shortage of [...]ver notícia -
Novel material facilitates measurement of concrete deterioration in buildings and other structures
Publicado em 24 janeiro 2024Concrete is an essential material in the construction industry, where it is fundamental to the foundations and structures of dwellings and office buildings, as well as roads, dams and bridges, among many other infrastructure projects. However, the service life of concrete is limited, and it must be monitored in order to guarantee the safety of these structures. To facilitate fast, low-cost, in-situ analysis that dispenses with the need to take samples to a laboratory, researchers at the [...]ver notícia -
Cases of chikungunya and zika fall in Brazil, but most risk clusters exhibit an upward trend
Publicado em 22 janeiro 2024Analysis of occurrence and co-occurrence patterns shows the highest-risk clusters of chikungunya and zika in Brazil spreading from the Northeast to the Center-West and coastal areas of São Paulo state and Rio de Janeiro state in the Southeast between 2018 and 2021, and increasing again in the Northeast between 2019 and 2021. In Brazil overall, spatial variations in the temporal trends for chikungunya and zika decreased 13% and 40% respectively, but 85% and 57% of the clusters in [...]ver notícia -
Nanoparticles with antibacterial action shorten duration of tuberculosis treatment
Publicado em 21 dezembro 2023A low-cost technology involving nanoparticles loaded with antibiotics and other antimicrobial compounds that can be used in multiple attacks on infections by the bacterium responsible for most cases of tuberculosis has been developed by researchers at São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Brazil and is reported in an article published in the journal Carbohydrate Polymers. Results of in vitro tests suggest it could be the basis for a treatment strategy to combat multidrug bacterial [...]ver notícia -
Molecule tested at University of São Paulo proves able to mitigate heart failure
Publicado em 08 novembro 2023Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, partnering with Foresee Pharmaceuticals, a Taiwan and US-based biopharmaceutical company, have tested a synthetic molecule for the treatment of heart failure. The study, funded by FAPESP, was published yesterday (11/07/2023) in the European Heart Journal. The theme was also highlighted in the magazine’s editorial. Heart failure is a condition in which the heart muscle cannot pump enough [...]ver notícia -
Test detects co-infection by novel species of parasite in severe cases of visceral leishmaniasis
Publicado em 06 novembro 2023In recent years, physicians and scientists in parts of Brazil where visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic have seen rising numbers of cases of co-infection by Leishmania infantum and Crithidia, also a protozoan but hitherto believed to be a mosquito parasite that cannot infect humans or other mammals. Accurate diagnosis is hindered by a lack of simple specific tests (more at: https://agencia.FAPESP.br/42072 and https://agencia.FAPESP.br/31581). To accelerate and facilitate detection of [...]ver notícia
