Adolescents who skip breakfast may develop obesity
Publicado em 22 julho 2019
A paper published inScientific Reportsdescribes how researchers affiliated with the University of São Paulo's Medical School (FM-USP) in Brazil and colleagues at institutions in Europe evaluated behaviors leading to weight gain in adolescents. Childhood obesity can favor the premature emergence of health issues such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The main finding is that skipping breakfast, a common habit among teenagers, correlates directly with increased waist [...]

Ants that defend plants receive sugar and protein
Publicado em 18 julho 2019Biologists Laura Carolina Leal and also Felipe Passos did a collection of experiments in Brazil’s Northeast area– especially in the inside of Bahia State, where the semiarid Caatinga biome predominates– to figure out exactly how plants with extrafloral nectaries engage with ants. Extrafloral nectaries are nectar-secreting glands not associated with pollination which supply bugs with carbs for protection versus herbivores. The nectar draws in aggressive bugs that take in both [...]ver notícia -
Experiment reverses the direction of heat flow
Publicado em 27 junho 2019Heat flows from hot to cold objects. When a hot and a cold body are in thermal contact, they exchange heat energy until they reach thermal equilibrium, with the hot body cooling down and the cold body warming up. This is a natural phenomenon we experience all the time. It is explained by the second law of thermodynamics, which states that the total entropy of an isolated system always tends to increase over time until it reaches a maximum. Entropy is a quantitative measure of the disorder in a [...]ver notícia -
New molecule maps cerebrovascular system
Publicado em 06 maio 2019Brazilian and US researchers have developed a molecule called FRW that, in tests with mice, proved capable of binding to blood vessels in the brain but not in other organs when injected into the bloodstream. They used the technique to produce the first ever complete map of the vasculature of the brain, paving the way for the creation of novel diagnostic imaging strategies and therapies for diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The research was supported by São Paulo [...]ver notícia -
Experiments with roundworms suggest alternatives for the treatment of schizophrenia
Publicado em 19 março 2019A group of Brazilian scientists have long conducted experiments with roundworms to investigate the role of schizophrenia-linked genes in patients' response to antipsychotic drugs. The results obtained thus far point to new ways of understanding resistance to certain classes of medication. The studies are conducted by researchers in the Pharmacology Department of the Federal University of São Paulo's Medical School (EPM-UNIFESP), collaborating with colleagues at the University of Campinas [...]ver notícia -
Bioluminescence sensors make new approaches to drug discovery possible
Publicado em 01 março 2019Canadian researchers, working in partnership with Brazilian colleagues, have developed 13 bioluminescence sensors for use in testing the effectiveness of new medical drugs in the laboratory. The study, published in the journalScience Signaling, paves the way for new drugs to be tested and characterized. The biosensors are based on the action of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which are membrane-bound proteins involved in communication between cells. The researchers did not choose to [...]ver notícia
