Giant trees of the Amazon get taller as forests fatten up on carbon dioxide
Publicado em 27 de setembro de 2025
The giants of the Amazon are getting even bigger. A sweeping new study has found the rainforest's largest trees are not only holding their ground, they're thriving — growing, multiplying in number and continue to play a major role in mitigating the impacts of climate change
There was a 3.3% expansion in big trees per decade, scientists found, after tracking changes in 188 intact forest plots across the Amazon over the past 30 years.
Led by almost 100 researchers from 60 [...]

Microplastics can get into brain tissue, study shows
Publicado em 16 setembro 2024The tiny scraps of plastic were found in the olfactory bulb, the part of the brain responsible for processing smell. Scientists in Brazil found microplastics in the brain tissue of cadavers, according to a new study published Monday in the journal JAMA Network Open Mounting research over the last few years has found microplastics in nearly every organ in the body, as well as in the bloodstream and in plaque that clogs arteries . Whether these ubiquitous pollutants can reach the [...]ver notícia -
The Amazon's crucial water cycle faces collapse, scientists say
Publicado em 14 fevereiro 2024Wildfires, deforestation and global warming could permanently destroy the water cycle that sustains parts of the Amazon rainforest if action is not taken in the coming decades, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. The study suggests that 10% to 47% of the landscape is at risk of transitioning away from rainforest by 2050 if warming and rates of deforestation aren't dramatically curbed. “So many stressors are intensifying — climatic ones and land [...]ver notícia -
‘Terrifying’ plastic rocks found on remote Brazilian island
Publicado emThe geology of Brazil’s volcanic Trindade Island has fascinated scientists for years, but the discovery of rocks made from plastic debris in this remote turtle refuge is sparking alarm. Melted plastic has become intertwined with rocks on the island, located 1,140 km (708 miles) from the southeastern state of Espirito Santo, which researchers say is evidence of humans’ growing influence over the earth’s geological cycles. “This is new and terrifying at the same [...]ver notícia
