Addition of left-handed chiral gold nanoparticles can enhance vaccine efficacy by more than 25%
Publicado em 18 abril 2022
Vaccines can be made over 25% more effective by adding left-handed chiral gold nanoparticles as adjuvants, according to a study by an international collaboration in which Brazilian researchers took part. An article reporting the results is published in Nature.
Three research groups collaborated on the study, one affiliated with the University of Michigan in the United States, and another with Jiangnan University in China. The Brazilian group was led by André Farias de Moura, a [...]

Aerial images and computer program locate pools, water tanks to identify areas vulnerable to dengue
Publicado emBrazilian researchers have developed a pc program that locates swimming swimming pools and rooftop water tanks in aerial images with the help of synthetic intelligence to assist determine areas weak to infestation by Aedes aegypti, the mosquito that transmits dengue, zika, chikungunya and yellow fever. The innovation, which may also be used as a public coverage device for dynamic socio-economic mapping of city areas, resulted from analysis and growth work by professionals on the College of [...]ver notícia -
Simple, inexpensive method to predict the risk of functional disability in older people
Publicado em 21 dezembro 2021Researchers at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, in partnership with colleagues at University College London in the UK have discovered an efficient, simple and inexpensive method of predicting the risk of functional disability in older people. They analyzed data from more than 3,000 over-sixties living in England and found that slowness of gait alone can be considered a predictor of loss of the capacity to perform the basic and [...]ver notícia -
Protein found in rattlesnake venom used for making a drug candidate to modulate blood clotting
Publicado em 02 dezembro 2021Researchers in Brazil and Belgium have developed a molecule of pharmaceutical interest from collinein-1, a protein found in rattlesnake venom. They used a technique called PEGylation to make the molecule, now called PEG-rCollinein-1, more stable in the organism and resistant to the immune system, obtaining a drug candidate to modulate blood clotting. An article reporting the results of the research has recently been published in the International Journal of Biological [...]ver notícia -
Study analyzes association between obesity and endothelial dysfunction in COVID-19 patients
Publicado em 16 novembro 2021In COVID-19 patients, obesity is the factor most associated with the development of endothelial dysfunction, a condition in which the blood vessels become unable to contract and relax adequately, increasing the risk of events such as heart attacks, thrombosis (blood clotting), and stroke. Endothelium refers to the thin sheet of cells lining the walls of arteries and veins, as well as the inside of the heart. Endothelial cells release substances that control vascular relaxation and contraction, [...]ver notícia -
Therapeutic heparin for preventing COVID-19 deaths is four times higher than the prophylactic dose
Publicado em 30 outubro 2021The anti-coagulant heparin reduces the likelihood of death from COVID-19 by 78% when administered in therapeutic doses to patients with signs of respiratory failure on admission to hospital, according to a study reported on October 14 in the British Medical Journal. The World Health Organization (WHO) currently recommends only prophylactic use of heparin for such patients. The prophylactic dose of the drug, prescribed mainly to prevent blood clots, is only a quarter of the therapeutic dose. [...]ver notícia
