Ant agriculture started 66 million years ago, study suggests
Publicado em 03 outubro 2024
Colonies of ants began farming the organisms after the event created ideal conditions for them to thrive, despite causing global mass extinction.
Fungi are a group of organisms that include yeasts, mildews, moulds, and mushrooms.
Researchers say many animals have been growing their own food since long before humans existed.
Ted Schultz, curator of ants at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, USA, and the lead author, said: “Ants have been practicing [...]

The first “state of wildfires” report – which is set to be published annually – assesses extreme wildfires that took place between March 2023 to February 2024, their causes, whether they could be predicted and how the risk of similar events will increase with future [...]ver notícia -
Exercising in short bursts could benefit those who cannot work out regularly
Publicado em 28 junho 2024Short bursts of exercise that last one minute or less could be beneficial for people who struggle to exercise regularly, an expert has said. It is suggested that the intense bouts – described as “exercise snacks” – could be particularly useful for bolstering the health and fitness of those who spend a lot of time sitting, such as obese people or those with chronic diseases. Examples used by Bruno Gualano, an associate professor at the Centre of Lifestyle Medicine [...]ver notícia -
Poor diet linked to 14 million cases of type 2 diabetes globally, study suggests

New planet ring system discovered in our Solar System
Publicado em 08 fevereiro 2023The ring system is around a newly discovered dwarf planet, named Quaoar, which is around half the size of Pluto and orbits the Sun beyond Neptune. Researchers say it orbits much further out than is typical for other ring systems, calling into question current theories of how ring systems are formed. The discovery was made by an international team of astronomers using HiPERCAM – an extremely sensitive high-speed camera developed by scientists at the University of Sheffield. It is [...]ver notícia -

Newly discovered eel packs the biggest electrical punch of any known animal
Publicado em 15 setembro 2019This is something to get amped up about: a team from the Smithsonian Institute has discovered a new species of electric eel that can generate an electrical shock of up to 860 volts, the strongest of any known animal. Despite their misleading name, electric eels are actually naked-back knifefishes and are more closely related to catfish and carp than to other eel families. They can reach up to 2.5m in length and are the only fish capable of producing such strong electrical discharge via three [...]ver notícia
