Heavy drinking linked with lasting impact on the brain, study finds
Publicado em 09 de abril de 2025
(CNN) — Heavy drinking is associated with increased risk of a type of brain injury linked with memory and thinking problems.
That's according to a new study in which researchers defined heavy drinking as eight or more alcoholic drinks per week.
This study, which was published in the journal Neurology, comes when clinicians and public health advocates are raising awareness of alcohol use disorder and issues related to excessive alcohol consumption.

When a massive asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs, ants began farming fungi
Publicado em 04 outubro 2024Sign up for CNN’s Wonder Theory science newsletter. Explore the universe with news on fascinating discoveries, scientific advancements and more. You have probably seen leaf-cutter ants carrying bits of plants, maybe in a nature documentary, at a science museum or in the “Circle of Life” song at the beginning of the 1994 Disney animated film “The Lion King.” Those ants don’t eat the leaves — instead they bring them back to their nests to feed a [...]ver notícia -
Microplastics found in nose tissue at base of brain, study says
Publicado em 16 setembro 2024By Sandee LaMotte, CNN (CNN) — Tiny plastic shards and fibers were found in the nose tissue of human cadavers, according to a small new study. The threads and microplastic pieces were discovered in the olfactory bulb, the part of the nose responsible for detecting odors that sits at the base of the brain. “Once present in this structure, there can be translocation to other regions of the brain,” said lead study author Luís Fernando Amato-Lourenço, a [...]ver notícia -
Your morning coffee may be hundreds of thousands of years old
Publicado em 15 abril 2024That coffee you slurped this morning? It’s 600,000 years old. Using genes from coffee plants around the world, researchers built a family tree for the world’s most popular type of coffee, known to scientists as Coffea arabica and to coffee lovers simply as “arabica.” The researchers, hoping to learn more about the plants to better protect them from pests and climate change, found that the species emerged around 600,000 years ago through natural crossbreeding of two [...]ver notícia -
24 ancient earthworks have been detected in the Amazon. There may be 10,000 more, scientists say
Publicado em 10 outubro 2023From deep in the Amazon rainforest, two dozen previously unknown pre-Columbian earthworks have been brought to light — and more than 10,000 such constructs may still be waiting to be discovered, according to new research. Across the Amazon basin, rainforests spread their leafy boughs over millions of kilometers. In the ground far below the treetops are ancient, long-hidden remnants of human habitation. They are preserved as ditches, paths and wells, sometimes forming geometric [...]ver notícia -
Meet the dinosaur that had a record-breaking neck longer than a school bus
Publicado emBy Katie Hunt, CNN A plant-eating sauropod that lumbered around what’s now China some 162 million years ago had a neck that was about 10 feet longer than a typical school bus — and the longest of any known dinosaur. The creature’s 49.5-foot-long (15.1-meter) neck would have allowed it to stand in one spot and hoover up the surrounding vegetation — maximizing the amount of food it consumed while conserving energy. The fossilized remains of the dinosaur, called [...]ver notícia -
This dwarf planet has a ring instead of a moon, and scientists don’t know why
Publicado em 08 fevereiro 2023Recent telescope data revealed that a small planet in the far reaches of our solar system has a dense ring round it. And scientists are baffled as to why. The planet, Quaoar, is one of roughly 3,000 small planets that orbit the sun beyond Neptune, and at 690 miles (1,110-kilometers) wide, it’s about the seventh largest, with Pluto and Eris ranking as the biggest. Observations of Quaoar made between 2018 and 2021 revealed that the planet has a ring sitting farther away from it than [...]ver notícia -

Tiny Amazon fish spotted in a single stream could go extinct just after being found
Publicado em 18 maio 2022The fish belong to a subfamily called South American darters. The discovery brings the known number of darter species to five. One species, Poecilocharax callipterus, is distinguished by its long, striking red-orange fins and a dark spot at the base of its tail. The other new species, Poecilocharax rhizophilus is the most miniature darter ever identified. This tiny fish only measures about three-quarter inch (2 centimeters) in length as a mature adult. It’s bright yellow with a [...]ver notícia -
