Microplastics found in nose tissue at base of brain, study says
Publicado em 16 setembro 2024
By Sandee LaMotte, CNN (CNN) — Tiny plastic shards and fibers were found in the nose tissue of human cadavers, according to a small new study.
The threads and microplastic pieces were discovered in the olfactory bulb, the part of the nose responsible for detecting odors that sits at the base of the brain.
“Once present in this structure, there can be translocation to other regions of the brain,” said lead study author Luís Fernando Amato-Lourenço, a [...]

24 ancient earthworks have been detected in the Amazon. There may be 10,000 more, scientists say
Publicado em 10 outubro 2023From deep in the Amazon rainforest, two dozen previously unknown pre-Columbian earthworks have been brought to light — and more than 10,000 such constructs may still be waiting to be discovered, according to new research. Across the Amazon basin, rainforests spread their leafy boughs over millions of kilometers. In the ground far below the treetops are ancient, long-hidden remnants of human habitation. They are preserved as ditches, paths and wells, sometimes forming geometric [...]ver notícia -
Brazilian researchers find ‘terrifying’ plastic rocks on remote island
Publicado emTRINDADE ISLAND, Brazil (Reuters) – The geology of Brazil’s volcanic Trindade Island has fascinated scientists for years, but the discovery of rocks made from plastic debris in this remote turtle refuge is sparking alarm. Melted plastic has become intertwined with rocks on the island, located 1,140 km (708 miles) from the southeastern state of Espirito Santo, which researchers say is evidence of humans’ growing influence over the earth’s geological [...]ver notícia -
This dwarf planet has a ring instead of a moon, and scientists don’t know why
Publicado em 08 fevereiro 2023Recent telescope data revealed that a small planet in the far reaches of our solar system has a dense ring round it. And scientists are baffled as to why. The planet, Quaoar, is one of roughly 3,000 small planets that orbit the sun beyond Neptune, and at 690 miles (1,110-kilometers) wide, it’s about the seventh largest, with Pluto and Eris ranking as the biggest. Observations of Quaoar made between 2018 and 2021 revealed that the planet has a ring sitting farther away from it than [...]ver notícia -
Tiny Amazon fish spotted in a single stream could go extinct just after being found – KION546
Publicado em 18 maio 2022Two new colorful species of fish have been found in Brazil’s Amazon Basin — and they are already at risk of disappearing due to extinction. The fish belong to a subfamily called South American darters. The discovery brings the known number of darter species to five. One species, Poecilocharax callipterus, is distinguished by its long, striking red-orange fins and a dark spot at the base of its tail. The other new species, Poecilocharax rhizophilus is the most miniature [...]ver notícia -

Newly discovered eel packs the biggest electrical punch of any known animal
Publicado em 15 setembro 2019This is something to get amped up about: a team from the Smithsonian Institute has discovered a new species of electric eel that can generate an electrical shock of up to 860 volts, the strongest of any known animal. Despite their misleading name, electric eels are actually naked-back knifefishes and are more closely related to catfish and carp than to other eel families. They can reach up to 2.5m in length and are the only fish capable of producing such strong electrical discharge via three [...]ver notícia
