Itaipu Binacional was one of the highlights of the BBEST & IEA Bioenergy 2024 Bioenergy Conference program, which ended this Thursday (24), in São Paulo.

The event brought together experts from Brazil and abroad, researchers, businesspeople and public authorities, with the central theme “Bioenergy and bioproducts: accelerating the transition towards sustainability”.

Rogério Meneghetti, superintendent of Renewable Energies at Itaipu, participated in the opening ceremony and the discussion panel “Biomethane and Biohydrogen”, alongside experts from Germany, the Netherlands and Brazil.

Meneghetti spoke about the investments made by Itaipu in Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul, such as the biogas production projects implemented since 2008 in Western Paraná, which served as the basis for the Distributed Generation Law, sanctioned in 2022.

Another notable initiative was the installation of Brazil's first pilot plant for the production of synthetic oil from biogas, which took place in 2024. Located in Foz do Iguaçu, the plant focuses on generating sustainable fuel for aviation.

“All of Itaipu's pilot projects, such as distributed generation, biomethane, green hydrogen, SAF, were important for the regulation of these issues in the country, which demonstrates the company's leadership role in energy transition,” reinforced Meneghetti.

Currently, Brazil has 137 megawatts of installed power in mini and micro distributed biogas generation plants and 32,8 gigawatts in solar energy plants, which are equivalent to more than two plants the size of Itaipu.

The conference was organized by the Bioenergy Research Program of the São Paulo Research Foundation (Bioen/FAPESP), in partnership with the International Energy Agency's Bioenergy Technology Collaboration Program (IEA Bioenergy) and the Bioenergy Society (SBE).
