Arboviruses, mosquitoes and potential hosts tracked in real time in São Paulo city
Publicado em 17 abril 2024
The technology used to sequence SARS-CoV-2 at record speed early in the COVID-19 pandemic has been successfully tested as a technique to monitor arboviruses and diseases transmitted mainly by mosquitoes.
In an article published in the journal Microbiology Society, researchers affiliated with Pasteur Institute in São Paulo, Brazil, and the University of São Paulo (USP), in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, describe the use of [...]

Brazilian researchers develop method of purifying water contaminated by glyphosate
Publicado em 22 setembro 2023Researchers at São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Brazil have developed a strategy for removing glyphosate, one of the world's most frequently used herbicides, from water. Inspired by the concept of the circular economy, the technique is based on sugarcane bagasse, a waste material produced by sugar and ethanol plants. Application of glyphosate-containing products is restricted or banned in Austria, Bulgaria, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, El Salvador, Germany and Greece, among [...]ver notícia -
Climate change may affect 40% of biodiversity in semi-arid portion of Brazil’s Northeast by 2060
Publicado em 21 setembro 2023The consequences of climate change in the Caatinga, the semi-arid shrubland and thorn forest biome in Brazil’s Northeast region, will include species loss, substitution of rare plants by more generalist vegetation, biotic homogenization (in which previously distinct plant communities become progressively more similar), increasing aridity, and even desertification in some areas. These are some of the findings of a study reported in the Journal of Ecology by [...]ver notícia -
Poor oral health could lessen survival from head and neck cancer
Publicado em 19 setembro 2023An international study has revealed strong associations between oral health and survival among people diagnosed with head and neck cancer. Specifically, better oral health, as evidenced by the number of natural teeth and dental visits prior to the time of diagnosis, was associated with increased survival. Importantly, those who had more frequent dental visits were more likely to have their cancer diagnosed at an earlier, and less deadly, stage of the disease than those who had few or no dental [...]ver notícia -
Hydroelectric power plants in Brazil threaten turtles that depend on rapids, study warns
Publicado em 15 setembro 2023A research project supported by FAPESP shows that the construction of new hydroelectric power plants in Brazil’s South region could have an impact on more than 30% of the habitat of Phrynops williamsi, the Williams’ side-necked turtle. The species occurs only in areas of Atlantic Rainforest and Pampa (the grassland biome adjacent to Brazil’s border with Uruguay and Argentina), and is classed as “Vulnerable” (facing a high risk of extinction) by the [...]ver notícia -
Legal mining sites in Brazil store 2.55 gigatonnes of CO2 in vegetation and soil, study estimates
Publicado em 15 setembro 2023As global temperatures continue to reach all-time highs and discussions intensify about ways to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, researchers at the University of São Paulo’s Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (ESALQ-USP) in Brazil have reported the results of a scientific study showing that if all the country’s active legal mining sites continue to operate in the coming decades, emissions will total an estimated 2.55 gigatonnes of equivalent carbon dioxide [...]ver notícia -
A novel method to obtain acetone more simply, safely and cheaply
Publicado em 13 setembro 2023Acetone is an essential chemical industry input and is used in the manufacturing of a wide array of products, such as adhesives, antibiotics, electronic components, solvents and removers, inks and vitamins, among others. Its production is complex and hazardous. To simplify the process and make it safer and cheaper, researchers in Brazil and Germany have developed an innovative method that uses only light and photoactive iron chloride (FeCl3), an inexpensive chemical [...]ver notícia -
Oral health deteriorates before and after bariatric surgery, study shows
Publicado em 06 setembro 2023Oral health deteriorates in morbidly obese people on a diet in preparation for bariatric surgery and patients who have undergone the procedure, with increasing caries, gingivitis and periodontitis. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by researchers at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) in Brazil. Articles on the study are published in the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation and Clinical Oral Investigations, stressing the importance of participation by a [...]ver notícia -
