“Expulsion by suffocation”: how soy expansion and herbicide use are displacing Amazonian communities
Publicado em 17 de novembro de 2025
In the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, the expansion of soy is not only transforming landscapes but also suffocating the communities that inhabit them. The intensive use of herbicides in soybean plantations— particularly glyphosate — has deeply disrupted the dynamics that sustain life in Amazonian communities and their relationship with the land.
These findings come from a recent ethnographic study based on long-term immersion in everyday life and in-depth interviews with [...]

Experts welcome ‘landmark’ moment for elephants after vaccine breakthrough
Publicado em 03 outubro 2025An international team of vets has made a breakthrough in a vaccine trial for a virus that killed seven elephants at Chester Zoo. Elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) is a leading cause of death for young Asian elephants, both captive and wild, with no cure. Trials with adult elephants at Chester Zoo found a new vaccine safely triggered a strong immune response. The team (University of Surrey, Chester Zoo, Animal and Plant Health Agency) observed no side effects. This follows five [...]ver notícia -
Amazon rainforest trees are getting bigger due to climate crisis, study finds
Publicado em 26 setembro 2025Trees across the Amazon rainforest are growing larger in response to rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, according to a major new study. The research, published in the Nature Plants journal, found that the average size of trees in the Amazon has increased by 3.2 per cent every decade for at least the past 30 years. Scientists say the trend is consistent with the fertilising effect of higher concentrations of CO2, which can boost plant growth. The findings come from the [...]ver notícia -
A hidden asteroid family may share Venus' orbit: 'It's like discovering a continent you didn't know existed'
Publicado em 24 junho 2025Astronomers are investigating a little-known and largely unseen group of asteroids that quietly orbit the sun alongside Venus — and there may be many more of them than we thought. "It's like discovering a continent you didn't know existed," Valerio Carruba of the São Paulo State University in Brazil, who led the analysis, told Space.com. "It's very likely there are other asteroids we don't observe today." These space rocks, known as " [...]ver notícia -
An 'invisible threat': Swarm of hidden 'city killer' asteroids around Venus could one day collide with Earth, simulations show
Publicado em 04 junho 2025A hidden swarm of "city killer" space rocks, known as co-orbital asteroids, is likely hiding around Venus and could pose an "invisible threat" to Earth over the coming millennia if the asteroids are not found, new simulations suggest. However, there is no immediate danger to our planet, researchers told Live Science. Co-orbital asteroids are space rocks that orbit the sun alongside a planet or other large body without truly orbiting the larger object. There are currently [...]ver notícia -
Scorpions ‘taking over’ Brazilian cities with reported stings rising 155%
Publicado em 08 maio 2025Scorpions are “taking over” Brazilian cities, researchers have warned in a paper that said rapid urbanisation and climate breakdown were driving an increase in the number of people being stung. More than 1.1m stings were reported between 2014 and 2023, according to data from the Brazilian notifiable diseases information system. There was a 155% increase in reports of stings from 2014 to 2023, according to research published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health. The rise [...]ver notícia -
'Hell ant' with scythe-like jaws may be oldest ant fossil ever discovered
Publicado em 24 abril 2025"Our team has discovered a new fossil ant species representing the earliest undisputable geological record of ants," study co-author Anderson Lepeco, a researcher at the Zoological Museum of the University of São Paulo in Brazil, said in a statement. "What makes this discovery particularly interesting is that it belongs to the extinct 'hell ant,' known for their bizarre predatory adaptations." The newly discovered ancient ant species, which researchers have [...]ver notícia -
The truth about alcohol and your brain: Scientists put a number on the years heavy drinking takes off your life
Publicado em 11 abril 2025Research continues to emerge showing that alcohol is bad for our health, increasing the risk of at least seven different types of cancer, disrupting sleep and hurting mental-wellbeing. Now, scientists have uncovered the exact number of years drinking could cut from your lifespan—and how many drinks per week produce the worst health outcomes. In a new study published in the journal Neurology, researchers found that heavy drinkers—those who had eight or more drinks per [...]ver notícia -
Groundbreaking DNA study reveals when humans likely began talking
Publicado emEarly humans may have started using language for communication over 100,000 years ago, a new review of genomic data shows. There are some 7,000 identified languages spoken globally, and researchers say they all have a common origin back when early human groups started spreading across the world. Our ancestors developed the cognitive ability for language, combining vocabulary and grammar into a system of expression, over millions of years of evolution. The capacity to talk in humans [...]ver notícia -
New bat coronavirus discovered in Brazil – but risks are unclear
Publicado emA new coronavirus discovered in bats in Brazil has been found to share similarities with the deadly Mers virus but its risk to humans remains unclear, scientists say. Researchers from São Paulo and Ceará discovered the novel coronavirus in collaboration with colleagues from Hong Kong University (HKU), and found it resembles the Middle East respiratory syndrome virus (Mers-CoV). The Mers virus was first identified in 2012 in Saudi Arabia and has since led to over 850 deaths [...]ver notícia
