Giant Planet Makes Jupiter Look Puny
Publicado em 09 abril 2019
A giant planet 13 times larger than Jupiter has been spotted.
Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), in Chile's Atacama Desert, will help to obtain answers on the formation and evolution of these exotic environments, as well as the possibility of life there.
In the past three decades, almost 4,000 planet-like objects have been discovered orbiting isolated stars outside the Solar System (exoplanets). Beginning in 2011, it was possible to use NASA's Kepler Space Telescope to observe the first [...]

How Snakes Lost Their Legs and Started Slithering
Publicado em 11 fevereiro 2019Snakes and lizards are reptiles that belong to the order Squamata. They share several traits but differ in one obvious respect: snakes do not have limbs. The two suborders diverged more than 100 million years ago. Identification of the genetic factors involved in this loss of limbs is a focus of the article “Phenotype loss is associated with widespread divergence of the gene regulatory landscape in evolution” published by Juliana Gusson Roscito and collaborators in Nature Communications. 2000 Year Of Rainfall Reveal How Little Ice Age Affected South America
Publicado em 26 julho 2018For the first time, scientists reconstruct the rainfall distribution in Brazil during the climate changes that marked the Middle Ages using isotopic records from caves A new study published in Geophysical Research Journal shows that the so-called Little Ice Age - a period stretching from 1500 to 1850 in which mean temperatures in the northern hemisphere were considerably lower than at present - exerted effects on the climate of South America. Based on an analysis of speleothems (cave [...]ver notícia -
Less Fat, More Hair and Younger Skin: Study Shows Benefits from Calorie-Restricted Diet
Publicado em 01 novembro 2017Caloric restriction diets have been associated with various health benefits, but their effects on the skin have not been previously demonstrated. Research conducted at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil shows that controlling calories helps mice live longer, although it reduces the reserves of fat in adipose tissue needed to keep the body warm. To offset this effect of the diet, the skin of the mice stimulated fur growth and increased blood flow to warm the skin. The authors also [...]ver notícia
