New biosensing platform detects SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in five minutes
Publicado em 29 novembro 2022
Rapid, cheap and accurate tests continue to be essential for epidemiological surveillance and for health services to monitor and contain the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Brazilian scientists have contributed to endeavors in this field by developing an electrochemical immunosensor that detects antibodies against the virus. The innovation is described in an article published recently in the journal ACS Biomaterials Science and Engineering.
In search of a novel diagnostic method, the group opted for a [...]

Anthelmintic inhibits exacerbated inflammatory response related to COVID-19 in preclinical research
Publicado em 22 outubro 2022Experiments involving animals and human cells conducted at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil suggest that niclosamide, an anthelmintic widely used against tapeworms, effectively inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication as well as the exacerbated inflammatory response that leads to death in many patients with severe COVID-19. More research is needed to find out whether the effects, described in an article published in Science Advances, are confirmed in patients with the disease, and [...]ver notícia -
Brazilian study reveals the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the central nervous system
Publicado em 01 outubro 2022A Brazilian study published in the journal PNAS describes some of the effects infection by SARS-CoV-2 can have on the central nervous system. A preliminary version (not yet peer-reviewed) posted in 2020 was one of the first to show that the virus that causes COVID-19 can infect brain cells, especially astrocytes. It also broke new ground by describing alterations in the structure of the cortex, the most neuron-rich brain region, even in cases of mild COVID-19. The cerebral cortex is the [...]ver notícia -
Researchers analyze acute and post-acute COVID-19 presentations in athletes
Publicado em 09 julho 2022Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil analyzed data from 43 scientific articles describing the effects of COVID-19 on athletes and concluded that while the disease was asymptomatic or mild in the vast majority of cases (94%), about 8% of the subjects concerned had persistent symptoms affecting their performance and potentially preventing a return to training and competing. The data they analyzed referred to some 11,500 athletes, including amateurs and [...]ver notícia -
Study reveals how COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people perceive the passage of time
Publicado em 29 junho 2022The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people perceive the passage of time, according to an article published in the journal Science Advances. At the end of the first month of social distancing, in May 2020, most participants in the study (65%) reported feeling time was passing more slowly. The researchers classified this perception as “time expansion” and found it to be associated with feelings of loneliness and a lack of positive experiences in the period. An even [...]ver notícia
