Scientists Seek Faster Route to Treat Depression
Publicado em 05 janeiro 2021
Treatment of depression faces two main challenges. The first is that almost 50% of patients do not respond well to existing antidepressants. The second is that conventional medications take a relatively long time—around three to five weeks—to have the desired effect. A group of researchers affiliated with the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil set out to tackle the second problem by using epigenetic modulators to try to “erase” the consequences of stress. Diabetes epidemic detected among Xavante indigenous community in Central Brazil
Publicado em 11 novembro 2020The Xavante, one of the indigenous communities most vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 in Brazil, are suffering from an epidemic of diabetes, a “silent” disease considered a risk factor for severe COVID-19. A group of researchers affiliated with the Federal University of São Paulo’s Medical School (EPM-UNIFESP) and the University of São Paulo’s Ribeirão Preto Medical School (FMRP-USP) examined the retinas of 157 individuals before the COVID-19 pandemic and [...]ver notícia -
Atrophy can be combated by boosting expression of an enzyme produced in muscles
Publicado em 07 novembro 2020Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil have shown for the first time that stimulating expression of a protein naturally produced by the human body can be a strategy to combat loss of skeletal muscle mass, which happens normally with aging but can intensify in cases of neurodegenerative or inflammatory disease, or in patients who spend long periods in intensive care units (ICUs). Ten days in an ICU are estimated to result in the loss of up to 20% of muscle mass in the [...]ver notícia -
Researchers use genomics to reconstitute yellow fever outbreak in São Paulo
Publicado em 06 novembro 2020Yellow fever virus is normally confined to the Amazon region, but the virus circulated in the Southeast of Brazil between 2016 and 2018, causing the worst epidemic and epizootic outbreaks there for decades. The Ministry of Health confirmed 2,251 cases of yellow fever in humans and 1,567 cases in monkeys in Brazil between December 2016 and June 2019. According to a study published in the journal PLOS Pathogens, the three epidemic/epizootic waves that occurred in this period in the state of [...]ver notícia -
Chikungunya May Affect Central Nervous System As Well As Joints And Lungs
Publicado em 04 novembro 2020Washington [US], November 5 (ANI): A study conducted by an international team of researchers with FAPESP's support shows that infection by chikungunya virus can produce even more severe manifestations than the typical symptoms of the disease, such as acute fever, headache, rash, and intense joint and muscle pain. The analysis was performed by 38 researchers affiliated with the Federal University of Ceara (UFC), the University of Sao Paulo (USP), and the Ministry of Health in Brazil, and [...]ver notícia -
Study reveals factors that can make placenta less capable of protecting fetus from zika
Publicado em 28 outubro 2020Genetic factors that reduce the placenta’s capacity to protect the fetus from the zika virus are described by Brazilian researchers in an article published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. According to the authors, the findings help explain why only some babies whose mothers are infected by zika virus during pregnancy are born with some kind of anomaly. Since the 2015 epidemic at least 3,500 babies have suffered from zika congenital syndrome, which includes microcephaly, brain [...]ver notícia -
Study identifies key enzyme for development of autoimmune diseases
Publicado em 20 outubro 2020Scientists affiliated with the Center for Research on Inflammatory Diseases (CRID), hosted by the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil, have discovered that an enzyme involved in key metabolic processes also plays a role in immune cell differentiation and hence in the development of autoimmune diseases. The finding could contribute to the future development of new treatments and more cost-effective and resolutive medications for this kind of disease. The study is reported in the [...]ver notícia
