Brazil inaugurated an Artificial Intelligence center this week with the support of the technology giant IBM for the development of research in search of automated solutions for issues of great social, economic and environmental impact, academic sources reported Thursday.
The center began its activities on Tuesday and is the result of an alliance between the University of Sao Paulo (USP), one of the most prestigious in Latin America, the American multinational IBM and the Foundation for Research Support of the State of Sao Paulo (FAPESP , for its acronym in Portuguese).
The so-called “C4AI” will be financed with up to 20 million dollars over the next ten years by the three institutions, of which half will be provided by IBM and FAPESP.
More than one hundred researchers from the most diverse areas will participate in this initiative, according to Fabio Cozman, professor at USP and director of the center, which to date is the largest in size in Brazil.
“Our goal is to be a center of excellence in the field of Artificial Intelligence, but at this first moment we are trying to focus on five projects,” he said.
Among them the development of tools for processing Portuguese; the construction of a response system on the so-called “Blue Amazon”, which covers the Brazilian maritime territory and, increasing the efficiency in the food production chain based on Artificial Intelligence.
Also included in this list of priority studies is a project to improve the diagnosis and rehabilitation of patients who have suffered cerebrovascular accidents and another on public policies related to the future of the labor market.
In practice, the “C4AI” researchers will develop computer programs that have the ability to automatically solve certain problems and reproduce some skills considered “intelligent”.
“Artificial Intelligence can bring many benefits in terms of increasing productivity and improving the quality of life. Our ultimate goal is to improve the lives of humanity and government and business support is essential to carry out that task, ”Cozman stressed.
