Publicado em 27 de abril de 2025
April 25 (Reuters) - Scientists have identified the fossilized remains of the oldest-known ant - a winged insect with fearsome scythe-like jaws that lived about 113 million years ago during the age of dinosaurs and was preserved in limestone unearthed in northeastern Brazil.
The species, called Vulcanidris cratensis, is part of a lineage called hell ants - named for their demonic-looking jaws - that prospered in a wide geographical range during the Cretaceous Period but have no descendants [...]

Wildfires caused major CO2 emissions last year — annual study
Publicado em 13 agosto 2024PARIS, France - Wildfires made more frequent and intense by climate change released significant quantities of CO2 into the air in 2023-2024, said a first-of-its-kind annual study published Wednesday. Fires in natural areas caused 8.6 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions worldwide between March 2023 and February 2024 -- 16 percent above average. Only a relatively calm fires season in the African savannah prevented the 2023-2024 season from breaking a fresh record for CO2 emissions at the global [...]ver notícia -
Brazilian researchers find ‘terrifying’ plastic rocks on remote island
Publicado emTRINDADE ISLAND, Brazil (Reuters) – The geology of Brazil’s volcanic Trindade Island has fascinated scientists for years, but the discovery of rocks made from plastic debris in this remote turtle refuge is sparking alarm. Melted plastic has become intertwined with rocks on the island, located 1,140 km (708 miles) from the southeastern state of Espirito Santo, which researchers say is evidence of humans’ growing influence over the earth’s geological [...]ver notícia -
Astronomers astonished by ring around frigid distant world Quaoar
Publicado em 09 fevereiro 2023WASHINGTON - The small distant world called Quaoar, named after a god of creation in Native American mythology, is producing some surprises for astronomers as it orbits beyond Pluto in the frigid outer reaches of our solar system. Researchers said on Wednesday they have detected a ring encircling Quaoar akin to the one around the planet Saturn. But the one around Quaoar defies the current understanding of where such rings can form - located much further away from it than current [...]ver notícia -
Coronavirus can transform pancreas cell function; certain genes may protect an infected person's spouse
Publicado em 30 setembro 2021(Reuters) - The following is a summary of some recent studies on COVID-19. They include research that warrants further study to corroborate the findings and that have yet to be certified by peer review. When the coronavirus infects cells, it not only impairs their activity but can also change their function, new findings suggest. For example, when insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas become infected with the virus, they not only produce much less insulin than usual, but also start to [...]ver notícia -
An average of 15% of Brazilians have COVID-19 antibodies, study finds
Publicado em 27 maio 2021An average of 15% of Brazil’s 210 million people have COVID-19 antibodies, researchers announced on Wednesday. The study, backed by the Sao Paulo state government’s research foundation (FAPESP) and Federal University of Sao Paulo (Unifesp), was conducted up to the end of April when contagion was on the rise. Researchers found that the level of antibodies varied greatly across the country. For example, in the northeastern state of Ceara, 9.89% of people had antibodies, compared [...]ver notícia
