Lipid mediators can enhance regeneration of inflamed periodontal tissue
Publicado em 17 dezembro 2020
Maresin and resolvin, produced by the body from omega-3 fatty acids, can help repair tissue damaged by periodontal disease. A recent study shows that even in the presence of inflammation they stimulate periodontal ligament stem cells. The periodontal ligament is one of the structures lost in severe cases of the disease.
The study was part of the PhD research of Emmanuel Albuquerque de Souza at the University of São Paulo’s Dental School (FO-USP) in Brazil and was conducted at the [...]

Virtual reality-based rehabilitation for recovery of stroke and neurodegenerative disease patients
Publicado em 15 dezembro 2020Virtual reality-based rehabilitation programs are becoming an important complement to conventional motor therapy for stroke patients and individuals with neurodegenerative diseases. Immersion in virtual environments stimulates several sensory systems, especially sight and hearing, and intensifies central nervous system information input and output. The technology is expected to increase brain connectivity by stimulating the new neural connections needed to repair the losses caused by injury or [...]ver notícia -
Pulmonary hypertension drug may become a treatment option for cancer
Publicado em 15 dezembro 2020A drug used to treat pulmonary hypertension significantly reduced the capacity of tumor cells to migrate and invade other tissues in trials involving pancreatic, ovarian, breast cancer, and leukemia cell lines. Furthermore, in mice with an aggressive form of breast cancer, the drug reduced the incidence of metastasis in the liver and lungs by 47% and lengthened survival compared with untreated animals. The study is published in Scientific Reports. “The drug ambrisentan is an inhibitor [...]ver notícia -
Researchers describe cellular mediator that makes muscle adaptation to exercise possible
Publicado em 02 dezembro 2020The onset of any physical exercise program causes muscle pain that can hinder movements as simple as getting up from a sofa. With time and a little persistence, the muscles become accustomed to the effort, developing more strength and endurance. Researchers affiliated with Harvard University in the United States and the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil describe the cellular mediator that makes this adaptation to exercise possible in the journal Cell. The mediator is succinate, a [...]ver notícia -
Chikungunya can infect central nervous system and impair cognitive, motor functions
Publicado em 04 novembro 2020A study conducted by an international team of researchers with FAPESP’s support shows that infection by chikungunya virus can produce even more severe manifestations than the typical symptoms of the disease, such as acute fever, headache, rash, and intense joint and muscle pain. The analysis was performed by 38 researchers affiliated with the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Ministry of Health in Brazil, and with Imperial College [...]ver notícia -
New study may help combat loss of muscle mass associated with aging
Publicado em 29 outubro 2020Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil have discovered that the muscle regeneration promoted by aerobic exercise is mediated by changes in oxygen consumption by satellite cells, also known as skeletal muscle stem cells. The discovery is expected to be used to help people recover from injury and combat the loss of muscle mass associated with aging. Previous research showed that weight lifting and other kinds of strength training increase the number of satellite [...]ver notícia -
Researchers describe factors that reduce placenta’s capacity to protect fetus from zika virus
Publicado em 28 outubro 2020Genetic factors that reduce the placenta’s capacity to protect the fetus from the zika virus are described by Brazilian researchers in an article published in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. According to the authors, the findings help explain why only some babies whose mothers are infected by zika virus during pregnancy are born with some kind of anomaly. Since the 2015 epidemic at least 3,500 babies have suffered from zika congenital syndrome, which includes microcephaly, brain [...]ver notícia
