Study finds two substances capable of inhibiting proliferation of glioblastoma cells
Publicado em 07 de março de 2023
Glioblastoma is a malignant tumor of the central nervous system (brain or spinal cord) and one of the deadliest types of cancer. Few drugs have proved effective at combating this uncontrolled growth of glial cells, which anyway constitute a large proportion of the brain tissue in mammals. The standard treatment is surgical removal of the tumor, followed by chemotherapy with temozolomide, radiation therapy, and then nitrosoureas (such as lomustine). Patient survival has improved moderately over [...]

Protein with anti-aging action combats inflammation and avoids death of neurons
Publicado em 02 janeiro 2023The process of cellular aging is multifactorial, and its investigation involves several knowledge areas. Finding ways to protect cells against damage is a key focus. A group of researchers recently achieved noteworthy progress in this regard, as evidenced by an article published in Scientific Reports. According to the authors, in their study, the protein klotho protected glial cells against inflammation and death. Glia are non-neuronal cells of the brain and nervous system. There are several [...]ver notícia -
Study shows that 8% of athletes have persistent symptoms after contracting COVID-19
Publicado em 08 julho 2022Researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil analyzed data from 43 scientific articles describing the effects of COVID-19 on athletes and concluded that while the disease was asymptomatic or mild in the vast majority of cases (94%), about 8% of the subjects concerned had persistent symptoms affecting their performance and potentially preventing a return to training and competing. The data they analyzed referred to some 11,500 athletes, including amateurs and [...]ver notícia -
How the pandemic and social distancing have changed our perception of time
Publicado em 29 junho 2022The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people perceive the passage of time, according to an article published in the journal Science Advances. At the end of the first month of social distancing, in May 2020, most participants in the study (65%) reported feeling time was passing more slowly. The researchers classified this perception as “time expansion” and found it to be associated with feelings of loneliness and a lack of positive experiences in the period. An even [...]ver notícia -
Gene Therapy Reverses Effects of Autism-Linked Mutation in Brain Organoids
Publicado em 02 maio 2022In a study published May 02, 2022 in Nature Communications, scientists at University of California San Diego School of Medicine used human brain organoids to reveal how a genetic mutation associated with a profound form of autism disrupts neural development. Using gene therapy tools to recover the gene’s function effectively rescued neural structure and function. Several neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and schizophrenia have been [...]ver notícia -
Omicron has mutations detected in previous variants, which explains vaccine effectiveness, scientists say
Publicado em 12 fevereiro 2022Omicron emerged as a variant of concern only in November 2021, but all the mutations it contains except one had been described before that. Researchers at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) in Brazil, supported by FAPESP, attribute this factor to the effectiveness of the existing vaccines against the variant, reflected in the relatively small number of severe cases and deaths despite Omicron’s heightened transmissibility. The hypothesis is raised in an article by [...]ver notícia -
Infection by Chikungunya produces partial immunity against Mayaro virus
Publicado em 11 dezembro 2021A study conducted at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil suggests people previously infected by Chikungunya virus may develop partial immunity to Mayaro virus. The finding, presented in Journal of Virology, is based on experiments involving mice and blood serum from patients. According to the authors, this type of cross-protection may be one of the reasons for the absence of a major outbreak of Mayaro fever in Brazil. The study was supported by FAPESP. In the [...]ver notícia -
Study finds high rates of asphyxia-associated neonatal mortality in poorer parts of São Paulo state
Publicado em 11 novembro 2021Researchers who analyzed data for São Paulo state, Brazil, found the highest rates of newborn mortality from asphyxia in cities in the south, southeast and north of the state between 2004 and 2013. They cross-tabulated these results with economic data and detected a combination of high mortality with low per capita gross domestic product (GDP) in 31 of the cities. Neonatal asphyxia correlates highly with low-quality antenatal and postpartum care. These are the main findings of a study [...]ver notícia -
Phenomenon explains why patients who survive sepsis die sooner after hospital discharge
Publicado em 11 maio 2021An article published in Frontiers in Immunology suggests that sepsis can cause alterations in the functioning of defense cells that persist even after the patient is discharged from hospital. This cellular reprogramming creates a disorder the authors call post-sepsis syndrome, whose symptoms include frequent reinfections, cardiovascular alterations, cognitive disabilities, declining physical functions, and poor quality of life. The phenomenon explains why so many patients who survive sepsis die [...]ver notícia
