COVID-19 treatment: Study finds photodynamic therapy useful in treating secondary infections
Publicado em 05 agosto 2020Since the first COVID-19 case was reported in December last year, the viral infection spread across the globe, infecting more than 18 million people. At the earliest stage of the pandemic, the symptoms mostly indicated that the virus causes respiratory illnesses, but soon experts noticed several other symptoms such as delirium, diarrhoea, loss of taste and smell and even rashes on the skin in patients suffering from COVID-19. This ability of the virus to cause secondary infections in the body [...]ver notícia -
A newly identified electric eel species has the strongest shock of any living creature, study says
Publicado em 11 setembro 2019Two new electric eel species have been identified in the Amazon basin, including one fish with a record-breaking shock, scientists say. Researchers had previously identified only one species of electric eel in more than 250 years of studying the creatures that lurk in South American waters and stun their prey with electric discharges. However, the new genetic and ecological analysis, published Tuesday in the peer-reviewed Nature Communications, identifies a total of three unique [...]ver notícia -
Lithium-air batteries, that run on ambient oxygen, may power cars, houses in future
Publicado em 20 fevereiro 2019Lithium-air batteries, which run on ambient oxygen, may be a sustainable and environment-friendly way to store energy and power electric vehicles, houses, and industries of the future, scientists say. Current lithium ion battery technology will probably not be able to handle the coming decades' huge demand for energy. It is estimated that by 2050, electricity will make up 50 per cent of the world's energy mix. Today, that rate is 18 per cent. However, installed capacity for renewable [...]ver notícia -
Some of our system's youngest orbiting asteroids discovered in the asteroid belt
Publicado em 26 setembro 2018Brazilian scientists have identified four new families of extremely young asteroids, taking the total number to 13. The four families, all of which are less than seven million years old, orbit between Mars and Jupiter as part of a grouping known as the Main Asteroid Belt. The researchers dated the families using a numerical simulation method to process current data to go back in time to the asteroid formation era. "We identified the new families by means of numerical simulation using the [...]ver notícia -
