Ancient island submerged off Brazilian coast was (and may still be) mineral-rich
Publicado em 08 de fevereiro de 2024
In a paper published in the journal Scientific Reports, the experts explain that over 10 years, they travelled around the area in research ships and analyzed samples of seafloor sediment dredged at a depth of about 650 metres in the western RGR. They were able to characterize its mineralogical, geochemical and magnetic properties.
The samples contained mainly red clay with several minerals typical of tropical volcanic rock alterations, such as kaolinite, magnetite, oxidized magnetite, [...]

Brazil may be responsible for 5% of global annual emissions if all legal mining sites remain active – study
Publicado em 19 setembro 2023If all of Brazil’s active legal mining sites continue to operate in the coming decades, emissions will total an estimated 2.55 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) due to loss of vegetation (0.87 Gt CO2eq) and soil (1.68 Gt CO2eq). In a paper published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, researchers at the University of São Paulo’s Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture estimated the figures and inferred that such an amount of [...]ver notícia -
Flexible copper sensor can detect heavy metals in sweat
Publicado em 24 janeiro 2023An international team of researchers led by the University of São Paulo in Brazil has developed a portable copper sensor that is able to detect heavy metals such as lead and cadmium in sweat. In a paper published in the journal Chemosensors, the scientists explain that heavy metals are present in batteries, cosmetics, food and other things that are part of everyday life. When they accumulate in the human body, however, they can become toxic and cause health problems. “High [...]ver notícia -
Southern cattail highly effective for rehabilitation of areas affected by iron mine tailings
Publicado em 26 setembro 2022A recent study conducted by Brazilian researchers and reported on by the São Paulo Research Foundation demonstrated the potential of Southern cattail for use in the sustainable rehabilitation of areas affected by iron ore mine tailings. In a paper published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, the researchers explain that their experiments showed that the plant can scavenge up to 34 times more manganese from contaminated soil than other plants found in similar environments. How plants support remediation efforts in areas affected by Fundão dam disaster
Publicado em 03 abril 2022To reach such a conclusion, the group conducted fieldwork at Regência in Espírito Santo state, on the mouth of the Doce River near the border with Minas Gerais. The area was flooded by some of the tailings released into the environment when the Fundão iron mine tailings dam in Mariana collapsed. On November 5th, 2015, the Fundão dam, owned by Samarco – controlled by Vale and BHP – burst, releasing 50 million cubic meters of tailings waste in the Rio [...]ver notícia -
Coronavirus can transform pancreas cell function; certain genes may protect an infected person's spouse
Publicado em 30 setembro 2021Scientists were baffled when a band of seaweed longer than the entire Brazilian coastline sprouted in 2011 in the tropical Atlantic - an area typically lacking nutrients that would feed such growth. A group of U.S. researchers has fingered a prime suspect: human sewage and agricultural runoff carried by rivers to the ocean. Coronavirus can transform pancreas cell function; certain genes may protect an infected person's spouse The following is a summary of some recent studies on COVID-19. [...]ver notícia
