Lack of physical exercise during COVID-19 confinement may lead to a rise in mortality
Publicado em 19 janeiro 2021
Social distancing and working from home help prevent transmission of the novel coronavirus but can be conducive to unhealthy behavior such as binging on fast food or spending more time in a chair or on a couch staring at a screen, and generally moving about less during the day. Scientists believe the reduction in physical activity experienced during the first few months of the pandemic could lead to an annual increase of more than 11.1 million in new cases of type 2 diabetes and result in more [...]

Scientists Seek Faster Route to Treat Depression
Publicado em 04 janeiro 2021Treatment of depression faces two main challenges. The first is that almost 50% of patients do not respond well to existing antidepressants. The second is that conventional medications take a relatively long time—around three to five weeks—to have the desired effect. A group of researchers affiliated with the University of São Paulo (USP) in Brazil set out to tackle the second problem by using epigenetic modulators to try to “erase” the consequences of stress. Drug attenuates weight gain in animals fed a high-fat diet
Publicado em 02 dezembro 2020A drug originally developed to treat bacterial infections has proved capable of boosting the metabolism and attenuating the weight gain induced by a fatty diet in tests with mice. The study was conducted at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) with FAPESP’s support, and the findings have just been published in the journal Science Advances. According to Marcelo Mori, a professor at the university’s Biology Institute (IB-UNICAMP) and principal investigator for the project, the [...]ver notícia -
Diabetes epidemic detected among Xavante indigenous community in Central Brazil
Publicado em 10 novembro 2020The Xavante, one of the indigenous communities most vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 in Brazil, are suffering from an epidemic of diabetes, a “silent” disease considered a risk factor for severe COVID-19. A group of researchers affiliated with the Federal University of São Paulo’s Medical School (EPM-UNIFESP) and the University of São Paulo’s Ribeirão Preto Medical School (FMRP-USP) examined the retinas of 157 individuals before the COVID-19 pandemic and [...]ver notícia -
Microbiome-based technologies drive multibillion-dollar market
Publicado em 28 setembro 2020A new field of research in microbiology is transforming the way scientists see fungi, bacteria and other microorganisms. Microbiome research is so promising that it has drawn attention from funders and industry as well as scientists. In the United States alone, the market for microbiome-based agricultural products is expected to be worth more than $10 billion by 2025. Research on the human microbiome has surpassed $1.7 billion in the past decade. Scientific study of microbiomes is growing [...]ver notícia -
Wearable sensors printed on natural materials analyze substances present in sweat
Publicado em 17 agosto 2020A wearable sensor printed on microbial nanocellulose, a natural polymer, has been created in Brazil by researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) in São Carlos in collaboration with colleagues at São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Araraquara, the University of Araraquara (UNIARA), the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), and the Brazilian National Nanotechnology Laboratory (LNNano). The skin-adherent sensor is an improved substitute for conventional sensors printed [...]ver notícia -
Machine learning makes drug repurposing for psychiatric disorders more effective
Publicado em 03 agosto 2020Artificial intelligence can increase the effectiveness of drug repositioning or repurposing research, according to a study published in Translational Psychiatry. In the study, which was supported by São Paulo Research Foundation—FAPESP, Brazilian researchers correlated information on genes associated with psychiatric and neurological disorders and drugs approved for use in treating other diseases that might potentially inhibit or activate these genes. The study identified [...]ver notícia
