Nanoscale engineering brings light-twisting materials to more extreme settings
Publicado em 30 de maio de 2024
Imaging the hot turbulence of aircraft propulsion systems may now be possible with sturdy sheets of composite materials that twist light beams, according to research led by the University of Michigan and Air Force Research Laboratory.
The sheets were produced with a new manufacturing method that opens possibilities beyond aircraft design, as it enables new classes of materials to be used in polarization optics. While the team demonstrated high temperature tolerance, new mechanical, [...]

Targeting multiple COVID variants through the twist in the spike protein
Publicado emTeardrop-shaped particles designed to inactivate multiple strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus could one day complement existing treatments for COVID-19, according to a new study led by researchers at the University of Michigan and Jiangnan University in Wuxi, China. The COVID mRNA vaccines have been highly effective at preventing severe cases of the disease, but COVID-19 can still hospitalize vaccinated individuals, especially the elderly. New strains also continue to emerge, requiring constant [...]ver notícia -
Twisted vibrations enable quality control for chiral drugs and supplements
Publicado emJournal Reference: Choi, W.J., Yano, K., Cha, M. et al. Chiral phonons in microcrystals and nanofibrils of biomolecules. Nat. Photon, 2022 DOI: 10.1038/s41566-022-00969-1 The researchers hope that the technique could also help diagnose harmful accumulations of twisted molecules in the body, including bladder stones, insulin fibrils and amyloid aggregations such as the plaques that appear in Alzheimer’s disease. In a world of curled molecules, biology often favors [...]ver notícia
