Propolis improves immunity, reduces free radicals and attenuates chronic inflammation in HIV patients
Publicado em 02 de julho de 2023
An article published in the journal Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy demonstrates the beneficial effects of consuming 500 milligrams (mg) per day of propolis for people living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The authors found that the group given propolis, unlike the group given placebo, displayed a significant reduction in plasma levels of malondialdehyde, a marker of oxidative stress. Total antioxidant capacity increased slightly in the same group, reflecting the direct combating of [...]

Cancer therapy shows potential to treat severe COVID-19 in pre-clinical trials
Publicado em 29 outubro 2022An article published in Science Advances suggests that a type of cancer treatment known as immune checkpoint blockade may be beneficial in certain cases of severe COVID-19. The creators of this therapy, which can successfully activate the immune system to fight cancer, won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The findings reported by the authors were based on experiments involving cells from patients treated in intensive care units (ICUs) after being infected by SARS-CoV-2, and [...]ver notícia -
Research shows population between 10 and 40 years vulnerable to measles
Publicado em 11 abril 2020Research carried out with the population of São José do Rio Preto, in the interior of São Paulo, showed that while 32.9% of people between 10 and 40 years old do not have immunity against measles, the presence of antibodies in the group over 50 reaches 99 %. Supported by the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (Fapesp), the study tested 981 people, of various age groups. Considering the total number of individuals who were vaccinated against rubella and [...]ver notícia -
Fear really can turn your hair white, new research suggests
Publicado em 23 janeiro 2020For centuries the legend of people's hair turning white with fear has persisted. Famously, Marie Antoinette's luxuriant strawberry-blonde locks were said to have turned blanc on the night before her execution. Now new research, published in the journal Nature, suggests extreme stress may indeed cause hair to lose its pigmentation. Experiments by a Harvard University team have shown that extreme levels of stress causes the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the [...]ver notícia -
Nanotechnology delivers hepatitis B vaccine
Publicado em 11 julho 2019Brazilian and European researchers have demonstrated exactly how a nanotechnology-based compound delivers an oral vaccine against hepatitis B to the immune system. When particles containing silica and an antigen combine, even though they are different sizes, they reach the intestine without being destroyed by the acidity of the digestive system. A compound of nanostructured SBA-15 silica and HBsAg, the hepatitis B surface antigen, was submitted to different types of X-ray imaging in European [...]ver notícia -
Biophotonic therapy eliminates bacteria and viruses from organs before transplantation
Publicado em 13 abril 2019A new technique for the decontamination of organs before transplantation using ultraviolet and red light irradiation has been developed by Brazilian and Canadian researchers and is described in an article published in the journal Nature Communications. The research is supported by São Paulo Research Foundation — FAPESP and has been partially conducted at the Optics and Photonics Research Center (CEPOF), hosted by the University of São Paulo (USP) at São Carlos in São Paulo State [...]ver notícia
