A study released by the São Paulo Research Foundation revealed that between 2013 and 2021, illegal deforestation on indigenous lands in the Brazilian Amazon is set to increase by 129 percent.
It generated 96 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, up 59 percent between 2019 and 2021, detailed the study published in the journal “Scientific Reports.”
The study analyzed 232 indigenous territories and found that deforestation in the territories reached 1,708 square km, equivalent to 2.38 percent of the Brazilian Amazon, reports Xinhua news agency.
