Ants invented agriculture after the fall of the asteroid that brought about the end of the dinosaurs
Publicado em 07 de outubro de 2024
The disappearance of dinosaurs is a well-known consequence of the fall of a giant asteroid to Earth 66 million years ago. What is less known is that the phenomenal quantity of dust projected into the air, when this celestial body 10 kilometers in diameter struck our planet, darkened the sky for three years. Photosynthesis became almost impossible, temperatures dropped and many species became extinct. Another remarkable event also occurred. “In the shadow of the fifth mass extinction, ants [...]

Climate – Heat waves cause 150,000 deaths worldwide each year, according to a study
Publicado em 15 maio 2024Between 1990 and 2019, heatwaves were responsible for 153,078 deaths per year, the equivalent of 236 deaths per ten million inhabitants, or around 1% of deaths worldwide. Most deaths have occurred in Asia, but Europe proportionally has the highest mortality rates with 655 deaths per ten million people. Nationally, Greece, Malta and Italy had the highest number of heat-related deaths. Overall, regions with dry climates and lower average incomes had the most heatwave-related deaths, the [...]ver notícia -
The genomes of Arabica coffee and its relatives finally deciphered
Publicado em 15 abril 2024Genomes deciphered and genealogical relationships reconstructed The very low diversity of Arabica cultivated, through its two historical lines – Typica and Bourbon – and their derived varieties, makes its production particularly sensitive to climatic or health risks. In order to enlighten specialists in the improvement of modern varieties, scientists from 18 countries, collaborating under the initiative of the IRD and Nestlé, tackled the sequencing of the three [...]ver notícia -
France stands “alongside” Brazil, which will develop nuclear propulsion, announced Emmanuel Macron
Publicado emFrench Presidents Emmanuel Macron and Brazilian Presidents Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva celebrated, Wednesday March 27, the strategic partnership between the two countries on the occasion of the launch of a Franco-Brazilian-made submarine near Rio de Janeiro. On the second day of his visit to Brazil, Mr. Macron met Lula at the ultramodern Itaguai shipyard for the launching of the third submarine, in a series of four, of French design with conventional propulsion. When the green lanterns go out in the Brazilian savannah
Publicado em 04 janeiro 2024The disappearance of bioluminescent beetles from the Brazilian Cerrado: a loss for biodiversity and technology In the darkness of the Cerrado, the savannah of Brazil and its second largest biome, the larvae of the beetle Pyrearinus termitilluminans, which live in termite mounds, display green lanterns to capture prey attracted to the bright light. This phenomenon is becoming increasingly rare, signaling a loss not only of biodiversity, but also of technological and economic [...]ver notícia -
Study paves way for development of advanced quantum networks
Publicado em 13 dezembro 2023Coherent information transmission in the electromagnetic spectrum: a crucial step for advanced quantum networks The ability to transmit information coherently across the band of the electromagnetic spectrum, from microwave to infrared, is vitally important to the development of advanced quantum networks used in computing and communications. A recent study highlighted the use of nanoscale optomechanical cavities to achieve this goal. A study led by researchers from the State University of [...]ver notícia -
Emerging threat: Rabies virus from marmosets found in Brazilian bats
Publicado em 16 novembro 2023A recent study found a surprising link between rabies virus variants found in bats and those found in white-tufted marmosets in northeastern Brazil. This finding is important because of the potential risk of transmitting rabies to humans, and is particularly concerning since a man died in May after a marmoset bite. Emergence in wildlife Rabies, a fatal disease for humans, is increasingly detected in various wildlife species, including marmosets found in forests and urban areas across [...]ver notícia -
Acetone production disrupted by a 25°C method
Publicado em 15 setembro 2023In the field of chemical industry, acetone is an essential element used in the manufacturing of many products such as adhesives, antibiotics, electronic components, solvents and strippers, inks and vitamins, among others. Its production is complex and dangerous. To simplify this process and make it safer and less expensive, researchers in Brazil and Germany have developed an innovative method that uses only light and photoactive iron chloride (FeCl3), an inexpensive chemical compound. The [...]ver notícia -
Brazil. Study shows CO2 emissions in the Amazon have doubled under Bolsonaro
Publicado em 23 agosto 2023Carbon emissions in the Amazon doubled in 2019 and 2020, the first two years of far-right ex-Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s tenure, when deforestation was at its highest, according to a study released Wednesday. The world’s largest rainforest is vital to curbing global warming. However, scientists have shown that it has already begun to release more CO2 than it absorbs, approaching a “point of no return” which would see it turn into savannah. Using air [...]ver notícia -
strength training may delay disease progression
Publicado em 04 julho 2023To protect your brain from Alzheimer’s disease, you should lift weights… A recent study, conducted by researchers affiliated with Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and University of São Paulo (USP), highlighted the role of resistance training, such as strength training, in preventing and delaying neurodegenerative disease. Resistance training reduces stress and therefore Alzheimer’s risk For this study presented in the journal Frontiers in [...]ver notícia
